Invoicing - Customers to pay deposits on invoices
To have the ability for customers to pay deposit through invoices
Purposes: Business can just send one invoice to customer/client, so they don’t have to send multiple invoices when it comes to part payment.
Hey community, we want to acknowledge all the feedback you’ve provided on this idea. We know from your comments here and through other channels that taking deposits or partial payments on invoices is a crucial part of the workflow for many businesses, whether it's to cover initial costs or to confirm a new project.
In terms of current options, within Xero there is the ability to create prepayments. Alternatively there are some third-party apps that serve these needs, too.
However, we do want to share that our product team is actively working on a solution that'll allow you to request and accept deposit payments.
While we can't give specifics on a timeline as yet, please know that this is a priority for us. We're grateful for the detailed feedback you've provided so far, which has been invaluable in getting us to this point.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated on our progress right here on this thread. Thanks for being involved and sharing with us through community product ideas!🙂

We cannot process invoices smoothly without this function and we are looking at alternatives. If Xero can provide this, we will be satisfied!

@Rudi Moritz. You will not be the only one to leave Xero. Xero become very distant from accountants' requests.

This is actually really poor from Xero. Im going to leave because it is now the only accounting software of any note that doesn't have a facility for deposits request as standard. Deposits aren't unusual and in fact in many sectors it is the norm. The lack of functionality seems to reflect a lack of commercial experience/acumen by the Xero Team/Corporation. I am sure most customers would give this a wide-berth if they realised before purchase that this wasn't a standard feature. It seems there is a complete reliance by Xero on locking customers into Xero rather than product innovation and development. Going back to Quickbooks

I could not find anything in Stripe that allowed anything but the full amount of the invoice to be accepted.
How can you allow Stripe to enter the amount to be paid that is less than the invoice amount? -

There are so many situations where a customer is required to make several payments on the one invoice. This is making business operation so difficult to the point I am looking at moving to a different operating system

Please add this solution to xero invoices. Most Quickbooks invoices that I see have a partial payment option.

Well it turns out Xero already had a solution, but of course, you gotta pay more. We transitioned to Xero Projects and it's been great since then.

@AFROBEAT Australia. Unfortunately like other basic features, it's unlikely that this feature will be introduced soon. As there are other third party apps (that you have to pay additional for) is available and because they are considered Xero partners, they will not be in a hurry to add this. Just my thoughts. I was a big Xero fan, attended roadshows, marketed the **** out for clients, just to realise, appart from the lights and bling, they do not offer the basic and refer you to third party apps at an additional cost. From there I do not force clients anymore and the few that is still on Xero, I do service. But if they complaint about certain features that is not on Xero, I do recommend them to the other software companies that offer accounting software, at most of the times at a cheaper price. That unfortunately is the sad story. Not bad mouthing Xero, just sharing my experience. Xero at the start was all about the accountant. Sadly they have seem to have lost that care. Grown to fast? Who knows?

It's hard to believe xero saw a need for this feature back in 2015 and still no resolve...

Can I request just to be told when the feature is available? -

Still waiting for this necessary feature to business invoicing. I need my customers to pay 50% deposit to secure their booking. As someone who has spent a great deal of my time and investment learning and preparing automation in my business, I HATE that I am still being made to create 2 separate invoices for some customers or wait for them to pay the BALANCE by the due date having never received a deposit. Frustrating.

Stripe settings are controlled by Xero when you link the payment services through, hence you cannot change the payment settings in Stripe to allow for a partial payment. We have set up our invoices so that the deposit amount is shown on the invoice through use of macros in the word setup for the invoices.
This works fine if the customer pays via bank transfer as they pay the amount that is shown. However, if they wish to pay by credit card (through Stripe) Xero does not allow Stripe to accept anything other than the full amount. Just change the settings on the link to Stripe to allow for this to happen and it may solve a lot of issues for many of the users.
