Hi everyone, we want to thank you all for your meaningful feedback and detail of the uses you each have for enabling duplicate names for contacts.

Right now, the contact name field is the key identifier that interacts with many other Xero features, and as such, changing how this field functions is not a small feat.

As noted by others in the comments, some users have found adding unique characters or using the account number in the contact name useful.

At this time we don’t have plans for developing the ability to have duplicate names of a contact in Xero. However, the work happening around core features might open the door for improvements like this down the line.

For now, we'll keep a close watch on the support this idea continues to build, and we’ll make sure to share updates if anything changes.

Yes, "display name" is a good idea.

I'll have retired and stopped using Xero before anything regarding this is implemented.

    Consider the following scenario:

Customer A "John Smith" buys on my WooCommerce site. The system creates a new user in Xero, "John Smith".

John logs onto Xero, creating an account, to check his invoice.

Customer B, also called "John Smith" buys on my WooCommerce site. The system recognises the name in Xero, and overwrites "John Smith" A's data with "John Smith" B's credentials, address, email etc..

When "John Smith" A logs in, will he see "John Smith" B's transactions and credentials which would surely be a GDPR issue. Or will be be unable to access his own account and transactions?

When I ship "John Smith" A's product, I will see "John Smith" B's address and risk sending to the wrong person.

Don't hold your breath, this issue was first raised maybe 12 years ago and Xero has done nothing to address it.
