Xero's response doesn't address this concern directly at all. It's simply kicking the can down the road.
If Xero don't plan to offer the option to turn off autosave, or, add versioning along with autosave, we are guaranteed to lose money due to line items being accidentally deleted or edited.
If Xero do add versioning, it's important that there's an at-a-glance view of the 'last edit date/time' in list view, so we can quickly check that no invoices have been erroneously modified prior to sending them to customers. Otherwise, there's still no way of knowing whether an employee's mis-click has changed an invoice.
My preference is to simply have an option to disable autosave.
In the current state, new invoicing is dangerous and cannot be trusted as an accurate and true system.

Wonderful. All it takes now is a miss-click and once a line item is gone, its saved into the invoice and there's no versioning or way to recover it.
Our line items contain important information which is time-consuming to recover from the source system.
What's more, the user may not even notice they have made the error, costing the company thousands of dollars.
Switching back to classic until autosave can be disabled, or proper versioning is enabled.

Less than 30 days until classic invoicing is removed, and no response from Xero on this.
The most recent update email links to this page https://central.xero.com/s/article/Xero-new-invoicing-releases
... which has no mention of the ability to turn off or opt-out of autosave.
We are now working to switch away from Xero, as we can't bear the enormous fiscal risk of human error that is baked-in by this new 'feature'.
What a crazy backwards step. Disappointed for our feedback to fall on deaf ears after more than a decade working with Xero.
