Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the new navigation and homepage, Louise! I've just updated the title of your idea to help other members find and we can track the interest in a Projects widget.
We also have a couple of ideas related to simplifying the layout like you mentioned, and another for bolding of the navigation headings that you may like to vote for.

I would love a projects widget on the home page, perhaps with an overview of current billable time, project profitability, and a drill down to active projects?
