When creating bank rules, it would be great to have the ability to Set the transaction description using bank statement description. NOTE. The functionality to set the transaction reference using the bank statement description is already available.

I'm not suggesting setting the Reference field using value from bank statements description. I'm strictly suggesting setting the transaction description using data from the bank statement description.

Xero team, We're currently manually copying and pasting descriptions from bank feed. This is necessary for audit trail and also for quality checks we run based on transaction description.

i know folks have voted and commented on this idea, but no feedback from Xero. Would someone please at least acknowledge and let us know if this is in the works or if we should find a third party solution, like a Chrome extension as a solution.

I think the worst part is just not knowing.

I also agree with all above. It is important to have the bank description in the accounting record. I can achieve this by manually coding in the bank reconciliation itself or in cash coding but that negates the point of the bank rule. The bank rule is there to make coding more efficient/consistent.

It fails in its objective if you cannot bring the bits of the bank statement that you want into the description. I cannot justify coding 2000+lines a month manually.

This also feels like a very quick fix. Please Xero...when are you going to fix it?

I agree with all of the above. This seems like a basic function which should be a part of any auto-reconciliation within accounting software. The bank rules are very generalised and do not specifically address the need to have a blanket rule applied to find each different description which customers use. Adding to that, if Xero could add a function which shows any matching invoice numbers to be shown on the bank feed - no matter what the balance is or whether it matches exactly. We all know how to allocate part payments to invoices, however having that invoice come up initially would allow us to split the payment. Far quicker processing - which is one of the selling points for all accounting software.

This would be a very helpful feature. It seems an obvious thing to enable a bank rule to populate the description field from the bank feed.

Bank feeds tend to be very standard in content and layout.

The reference field can be programmed in this way. Please can you add this feature to the description box?

The Statement Description contains all the information about my transaction and is far too long to be in the Xero Reference field. Please find a fix

I'm a new user and am amazed this function does not exist - should be a quick fix and make my life a lot easier. Please can it be included!

It is very frustrating to not be able to bring the Description field from a Bank Transaction when setting up a Bank Rule. The Description field often contains specific details which are required for coding purposes or checking that the transactions have been coded correctly.
Xero PLEASE get up to date with this!!

The only way to check if the rule is working correctly is when the bank narration feeds into the GL in the description field. But the current bank rules does not allow for this due to only using user created data in this field.
How is anyone able to check if the bank rule has worked as intended.

On the other hand, your Cash Coding screen is very elementary, basically I do not have any opportunity to allocate account or other things on bulk basis. Manually one by one is apparently slogan of your XERO bank reconciliation work process. Another example is that if I have a bank account that do not any transactions in June, then I cannot reconcile that account until 30/06 for year end closing purpose.

Xero should update the bank rule with a feature bank statement line showing in the bank description. This is a basic feature and QuickBooks has it already where we can set up rules.
I will prefer to just tick a box asking Xero to populate the bank descriptions exactly as they come through from my bank account, rather than having to go through and change them each time.

Jesus I can't believe this isn't possible. I am coming from QuickBooks and this is REAL basic functionality that should be there.

I cannot believe this cannot be done yet, crazy!!! The fact you can select what reference to come through but not the description...honestly I think this is very lazy from Xero.

Very annoying and such a simple thing that should really be a standard feature.

Keeping bank memo is very important to make sure rule should still be applied to a particular transaction, transaction didn't fall under a wrong rule, and the rule itself was created correctly. Once applied, you no longer can tell if the application was correct without seeing bank memo.

QuickBooks keeps bank memo. I find seeing it extremely useful when reviewing client bank activity and my team's coding.

Agree. Xero says it has AI which determines how GL transaction descriptions show up in the Bank Reconciliation but it nearly always has to be edited:

1. Some of my clients pay an invoice with a description as follows: "Client Name Invoice 12345". For every future transaction, Xero's AI continues to put "Client Name Invoice 12345" even though the invoice number for future payments is different and is clearly stated in the bank feed description.

2. Some of my clients pay for different debtors in the one payment, but list the invoice numbers in a part of my online banking that does not come through the Yodlee bank feed. Xero AI assumes what the client name is eg. Jane Doe, each time instead of John Doe as it appears on the statement.

Hard to understand why the developers haven't done this already. The lack of this feature means I can't use a Rule as the description from the statement can't be added. Please implement this!

At the very least, there should be an option to keep the bank description as-is within Bank Rules. Cash coding is a huge pain without it.
