Hi everyone, thank you for your continued passion, and sharing how having the ability to group or combine line items within an invoice would give you the control to present information to your clients in the best way for your business.

In lieu of a direct feature, while I appreciate it won’t fit all needs here, the inbuilt calculator may help in some cases to combine costs of multiple lines to one, and we appreciate there are some customers that have explored third-party apps with more extensive functionality for the time being to full-fill their needs.

We’re updating the status of this idea to Accepted - While this isn’t on our roadmap atm, we see the value in this suggestion and it’ll be considered as we plan our future roadmap. We’ll update this thread if we have any more news to share.

Which order management system are you using Jason, if you're comfortable sharing?
Given that we are a long way off getting this functionality inside Xero, this sounds like an option that we'd be interested to explore.

Ben Harper has captured this issue and reasons to fix it perfectly, I second every part of his comment.

Hi team, pleased to share another update as progress moves along in this space.

We'd now doing some early testing of the teams concepts for being able to bundle inventory in Xero.

With the high interest for this in the idea, we'd like to offer the opportunity to be involved in the process - If you'd be willing to give some of your time to share back with the team, we'd love you to fill in this short questionnaire ✍️

While this will be limited to a small group, we'll keep you updated on the outcomes, here. Thanks!

Group line items in quotes and invoices to create bespoke 'packages', 'sections', 'assemblies', or 'kits' on a case-by-case basis, with headings and sub-totals for clarity.

Groups would be a type of new line item that can have other line items nested under them. Products and services can then be added as normal, then dragged in and out of groups. Groups would have a heading and description, and a sub-total of the line items nested inside it. Nested line items would retain their usual attributes (qty, price, discount etc).

    For example:

    Package 1
    Item 1 $100.00
    Item 2 $90.00
    Item 3 $360.00
    Item 4 $130.00
    Item 5 $20.00
    Package 1 Total $700.00

    Package 2
    Item 6 $450.00
    Item 7 $75.00
    Package 2 Total $525.00

    Subtotal $1225.00
    Total GST $183.75

    Total $1,408.75

Currently, the Products and Services list only allows for individual items to be listed. You can create an item and include multiple products in its description and cost, but then you lose the ability to track each product in that line item. Instead, each product has to be added to quotes and invoices as a line item. This results in long quotes with many line items, with no clear way to group each product by purpose to show how they relate to each other or to the quote/invoice/project as a whole.

Adding grouping features in quotes and invoices would greatly improve readability for the customer, breaking long quotes/invoices up into chunks rather than being presented with a wall of text.
Grouping products by their purpose also means that customers who do not have the technical knowledge of what an individual item is used for can understand which part of the project it is related to. Meanwhile those who are more technically minded can still be clear about exactly which products are being supplied.

This format is already widely used in the events industry, but would be useful to any business that typically has many items in their quotes/invoices which could be split into sections.

(An extension to this would be the ability to group Products and Services to create 'packages' that could be quickly added to quotes, and then edited as needed)

Hi all - thanks for taking the time to provide your votes and commentary on the idea to enable subtotals in invoices. We appreciate how this would make invoicing easier and enable you to provide a clear breakdown on invoices.

As you can imagine with a global product, the variety of ideas we receive is expansive and so the product team focuses on building features that will meet most people’s needs. In the interest of transparency at this stage this idea is not currently planned. However we’re still open to receiving feedback and votes. It could always be reconsidered at a later date.

In the meantime it’s worth highlighting (as a few have mentioned already) a workaround is to generate an invoice as a PDF and then edit the PDF externally. Alternatively our Xero App Store has many invoicing providers who may do this. You can browse the invoice providers
