Hi all
It's interesting that this was added by the Xero Team on July 25, 2012 (is that a mistake should it be 2022? Almost 11 years overlooking such a a key feature)
(BTW, a similar request - or should it be begging on our knees, pleading with tears - with more detail is over here if you want to vote again)
As it is I wll now sum up my marks on audit trail in QB and Xero, which I keep meaning to write up for an article for the press:
............................................................Xero .........QB
Audit trail report.................................... 2/10 ............5/10
(History and Notes is a mess and doesn't even export even if you wanted to play with the data yourself. See old QB desktop for maximum marks for a full audit trail report, with a journal view for each change of the transaction. Those were the days!)Account transaction report .....................N/A ..........8/10
(can add Last modified and Modified By columns in QB, doesn't get 10 for a reason not relevant here)Bank audit trail
(feed vs import column, running balance) ..9/10....... 1/10
(Unfortunately the banking section on QB is rubbish, bank reconciliation report can't be run until all transactions are ticked, and there is no bank statement there, anyway not for now, just wish they'd sort this out)PS History and Notes on each transaction - doesn't interest me. This would be included in a good Audit trail report. If I am looking at audi trail on a transactional level, it is like looking for a needle in a haystack and leads to major stress levels! Oh Xero how many more years without an audit trail report?

Hello everyone, we appreciate all the support here and understand how being able to import and export bank rules would help with clean up, and save time in updating or adding bank rules.
The idea has been closely considered, however we want to be transparent that building this specific feature is not on our roadmap.
Our current focus within bank reconciliation is on delivering more automation and intelligent tools to help you reconcile faster. This includes improving the core functionality of how Xero suggests and matches transactions, ultimately aiming to reduce the need for manual rule creation and management.
We're confident that these broader improvements will help streamline your workflow and address some of the underlying pain points you've raised. We appreciate your passion and feedback on this topic, and you can stay up to date with what's coming for bank reconciliation and other features on The Long and Short…

"We're also enhancing the suggestions and auto matching when you reconcile which overtime will help to decrease the amount of rules a business may need"
Interesting. Looks like AI is slated to make Using your own Brain obsolete (what we once called "Bank Rules").
This debate aside, here's a similar idea to exporting rules: -
That the Bank Rule screen should show more information other than the name of the rule and the condition, such as - wait for it...key information on the output side eg 2 The Contact 3 Line Items (Account Code and Tax Rate) and 4 Set the Reference, so you could see AT A GLANCE what the rules do, without editing them one by one.
But have no fear, I am not going to lose sleep on this and will leave this for a generation or two once Xero have sorted their "priority" ideas.

Eleanor thanks, the New Journal report, is a big improvement on the old one!
Regarding audit trail, it does have both "posted date" and "posted by" columns, so small round of applause.
However there is a still unforunately a FUNDAMENTAL flaw in the "journal report" (journal in Xero terminology means transaction, not a "manual journal" as accountants would understand it, although you can still filter for Manual journals should you want with the "more" button)
The flaw is as follows. Xero assigns a "Journal ID" which is great - the core of good Audit trail. However, for some reason I just dont get, Xero doesnt understand that editing a transaction, SHOULD NOT in any circumstance lead to Xero amending the Journal ID!
A Journal ID gets assgined when you create a new transaction. It shouldn't give a new one on an edit! As it is the Journal ID facility is completely unreliable because if the transaction (sorry, journal) has been edited, you will no longer find that ID, as it has been deleted from the history. (bang head against the wall 3 times)
Other minor flaws:
....transaction type (Source type) is missing (duhh, reminds me of the VAT reports, where transaction types are also omitted!)
....Export to Excel button (the one I have been requesting for years) is there, but doesnt seem to work (maybe it's me but I doubt it)
So back to the drawing board (hopefully not for too long) Xero programmers
If you do get these fixes out soon, I would try to get the New Journal report into a full blown Audit trail report with permuations of each edit showing, after which you could dump History and Notes altogether, maybe into the same place edited Journal IDs get dumped ;)
