Hi team, we want to acknowledge your feedback and the needs you’ve expressed for being able to view the transaction line description in the account transactions report.
While we appreciate not the news you’re hoping for here - we want to be honest with you all that there are no plans at this stage to change the behaviour of this report.
We appreciate there can be some confusion of what is shown as it does differ based on the account and the line’s origin. We have added detail within our Xero Central article, but I’ve also noted below for ease of reference.

Please show the actual transaction description in the description column of the Account Transaction Report!!
There is No useful report in Xero that I can export to excel and cross reference how transactions were coded against an actual bank statement.
This issue could be easily solved if the Account Transaction Report actually showed the "Description" In the Description Column instead of the vendor/contact (which is redundant and not useful at all as that's already presented in the Contact Column).
Similar to a bank statement, I need to see : Date, Contact, Description, Amount AND the Expense Account it's hitting. It's crazy that not one report does that.
This is something Quickbooks has figured out forever ago. I can see how the expenses are being categorized without opening every individual transaction. This is a VERY time consuming problem for us with Xero.
The solution is so simple: put the actual transaction description in the description column of the Account Transaction Report. Keep everything else on the report the same, and for bonus points, just allow us to export to Excel from the Find & Recode screen. Thanks for considering this fix.
