Thanks for submitting your idea on Xero Product Idea's, Ryan. We appreciate you taking your time to share changes that would be most meaningful to you.
Being open, we don't have any current plans for changing the Custom report behaviour but we'll continue to track the interest through your idea here and will update if there is any changes to share.

You’re absolutely right—custom reports should allow users to include balance sheet accounts in a way that shows period movements rather than cumulative balances, especially for accurate month-end reporting. Being able to report movements on balance sheet codes, such as capitalised wages, would eliminate the need for manual adjustments and significantly improve reporting efficiency and accuracy. This functionality is essential for finance teams who rely on clear period-by-period insights to reconcile costs and track capitalization correctly, and its absence can feel unnecessarily limiting in modern accounting systems. Just as platforms evolve to add practical features for user workflows—similar to how software websites like https://orcaslicers.com/ showcase tools designed to simplify complex processes—accounting report builders should also adapt to provide more flexible, movement-based balance sheet reporting.
Currently, Xero’s Business Snapshot links are hard-coded to open the standard Profit & Loss report, even if you have set a custom Profit & Loss report as your default, and unfortunately there is no native setting to change the snapshot link to point directly to custom default reports. While you can continue using your customized P&L for analysis and sharing, the snapshot itself will still redirect users to the standard report, similar to how support articles often provide workarounds rather than direct fixes—much like guides that explain resolving issues externally, for example this resource on fixing TM SIM no signal problems at https://tmregistration.ph/fix-tm-sim-no-signal/ , which helps users navigate a limitation rather than changing the core system behavior.
