Hi everyone, we appreciate your detailed feedback on how default tracking options for inventory items would improve your use of Xero. Atm, it’s possible to set default tracking on a Contact, however do understand why this isn’t suitable for all of you.

At this stage there’s no set plans to develop tracking in Xero inventory.

This is something we may consider in the longer term and we’ll continue to monitor votes and your feedback. We’ll update here if there’s any progress.

For service-based businesses that sell subscription products, the ability to assign tracking categories at the product (inventory item) level would be enormously valuable.

Many subscription businesses offer multiple product variations (e.g. size, frequency, location) but still require consistent reporting by subscription term or contract type. Being able to assign a tracking category—such as “Subscription Term”—directly to the product would ensure accuracy and consistency across all invoices.

Currently, tracking must be applied manually at the invoice line level. This introduces an unnecessary operational risk, as it becomes an additional data point that must be selected correctly every time an invoice is raised. In contrast, assigning tracking at the product level would be a one-off configuration task, significantly reducing the risk of errors while improving reporting integrity and efficiency.

This enhancement would be particularly beneficial for subscription-based service companies, where reliable recurring revenue analysis is critical for management reporting, forecasting, and investor or lender confidence.
