Hi everyone, we appreciate your detailed feedback on how default tracking options for inventory items would improve your use of Xero. Atm, it’s possible to set default tracking on a Contact, however do understand why this isn’t suitable for all of you.
At this stage there’s no set plans to develop tracking in Xero inventory.
This is something we may consider in the longer term and we’ll continue to monitor votes and your feedback. We’ll update here if there’s any progress.

Is there anyway we can assign a default tracking category directly to an item code? We have recently moved from Sage that did this for us automatically and we are having issues making sure the item code is refectled under the right tracking category (or in our case department). As we have to mannually add these to what are often multiple invoice lines, errors can occur and items are tracking under the wrong departments. We cannot preset the customer to a department as we have some customers who are serviced under multiple departments. I appreciate this might not be suitable for all businesses but if the option was available, this would save significant admin time and ensure our reports are accurate.
