Thanks for everyone’s feedback and detail on how important this feature is for your businesses.
To provide a little more clarity here, it’s currently possible to create a Credit note within an individual awaiting payment invoice or bill. This’ll copy the contents of the invoice/bill into a Draft Credit note where you can edit if needed. To save many users time, once approved the credit is auto applied to the related invoice or bill, but you can remove this if not applicable.
We appreciate this feature is not available for a Paid Invoice or Bill and we understand the importance of this for some organisations.
To help our product teams get a better view of the interest for the feature in Bills and Invoices it would help to track these through separate ideas - I’ll change the title of this idea to reflect Bills and we have an existing idea…

Hi Sara, along with Credit Notes, there is also facilities for Overpayment and Prepayments. Would these commonly fit the scenarios in which you're describing here where large amounts of funds are transferred and perhaps a business overpays their invoices to the business through which a refund is then issued?
Bein quite a tied in feature to the payments model I want to be open that we don't have any immediate plans for changing this or adding a new type of transactions that would directly add refunds to an invoice.

A refund button that creates a new credit note from an existing invoice would be super useful.
I know there are other ways to do it, but Xero should be as intuitive as possible, and this would help. Other accounting packages have this feature. Thanks!

Please make this happen.
This would be a fantastic option. One of the most common use for credit notes is to refund a customer for a returned item.
BTW this is easy to do in Kashflow (one of your competitor's software, which in most other ways is inferior).
