Lock dates - Ability to add password protection
Dear Xero product team,
Please could we have an option to Password protect Lock Dates.
Where certain user can only unlok Lock dates i.e. Accountants or Subscriber
At the moment anyone can unlock the Lock dates which defeats the purpose of the Lock Dates.
We appreciate the interest gathered on this idea, everyone. At this time we don't have any immediate changes planned for lock dates, but as we continue to develop parts of Xero this is something we'll consider as a possible enhancement for lock dates. If there's any news I'll be sure to update you here.

Thanks, but that's unacceptable given the concept of a common ledger requires different stakeholders to rely on the same data for government lodgements. An end of year process is a fundamental part of every accounting ledger since the dawn of time.

Would prefer to have the ability to specifically give / remove this access to certain users only, not a password as it could get difficult for accountants and advisors to manage and keep track of different passwords across all clients.

I agree with the idea of it being password protected or if we could just simply have the ability to tick or not tick a box next to "Set Locked Dates" under each user's permissions this would solve a lot of problems that we have with users unlocking periods after reports have been published.

The Lock Date screen should be expanded to password protect the year end lock date and allow only advisors who have the password to be able to make changes impacting the prior year end. Xero should also force users to add an explanation of why they have made any changes which could then be reproduced as an audit report showing a log of all changes that required a password. This should indicate who made the change and why and what impact the change had. Other suggested features may include an email to all users whenever the lock date password was used to make changes in a prior period.

I totally agree with this but I also think that it is important for the accountant/authorised user to be able to unlock dates just for one transaction. If you are in the middle of period-end and have locked the date then unlocking the date would unlock it for everyone and someone else could mess up your period-end work. In other softwares the accountant/authorised user can keep the date locked and just uplock for that one transaction that they are posting using a password. The main lock therefore remains closed and the period data protected.

A password-protected period lock is definitely something that Xero needs to introduce!

Quickbooks Online has a function to set a password on the period lock. It would be good if this can also be introduced with Xero, because it can avoid changes being made after a period has been locked (if the password is not known to all).
