Really appreciate those who’ve taken the time to share how this’d help in your day-to-day. We know being able to filter a Profit & Loss report by project would make it easier to understand how your jobs are performing.
Right now, the best workaround is to export your data and make adjustments for this in Excel, but we get that it adds extra steps.
There’s also the Profitability dashboard feature in Xero Projects, which gives a quick view of how each job is tracking, and may be helpful.
We’ll keep an active eye on the interest this idea continues to build through votes, but do want to be transparent that this is not in our roadmap for the foreseeable future. Thanks again for your input through Xero product ideas.

It would be very helpful if Xero added a reference field to input a project number/name in expenses with Xero Expenses. It would allow me to reconcile project details to the Account Transactions, since Account Transactions cannot be filtered by project name/number. Currently, I sort Account Transactions by Reference, and can then reconcile to Project Details, but Xero Expenses transactions don't include a field for entering a reference number/name, so I have to manually add them in each time. Thanks!
To be able to run a P&L by Project is vital for our business. Today, my boss needed to see a report that showed him total expenses by category for one specific project. I had to print a Project Financials report (which is essentially just a list of transactions), highlight expenses for the different expense categories, and manually add them up in order to get a total for Fuel, Meals, Materials, Supplies...., etc, for my boss. This was on a big project that spans 2 years, so you can imagine how long that took me! As we grow, we may have to find another project management system that will allow us to get reports by project. Thank you!
