In January, we switched from QuickBooks Desktop to Xero and overall, we are extremely happy and are so glad we made the change. Xero's system performance is great, their pricing model is much more fair than Intuit's QuickBooks Online and the vast majority of features are as good or better than what we had in QuickBooks Desktop. The main dashboard is great and the daily account reconciliation process is definitely more efficient than it was with QuickBooks Desktop. So, overall, we are clearly happy and Xero should be proud of the product that they offer.

With that being said, there are 3 missing features (compared to QuickBooks Desktop) that I think would make the product significantly better:

    1) Customer Hierarchies - We have large customers that have many departments and within Xero the only way to manage this is with Customer Groups, but the sophisticated Customer Hierarchies in QuickBooks Desktop were much better in terms of financial reporting. This allowed sales reports to subtotal by customer group, which I have found no way to accomplish in Xero. We currently need to run a "Sales by Customer Group" and a "Sales by Top Customer Summary" to get what was accomplished with one report in Quickbooks Desktop.

    2) Lack of Xero Expense Approval Hierarchy - In fairness to Xero, we did not even have Employee Expense capabilities in QuickBooks Desktop (QuickBooks Online does offer Expense Mgmt.), but the inability to be able to assign an approver by employee or do any type of approver hierarchy has resulted in only one person doing all expense approvals for all employees. 1st line managers really need to be able to approve expenses for their employees.

    3) The ability to set a default mileage rate. This is such a basic feature and would be so easy to implement, and the lack of this capability kind of undermines confidence that Xero Expense is a credible product.

Overall Xero expense is definitely a good start and most of the basics are there, but it needs some feature updates like these in order to make it viable for anyone but the smallest organizations.

I sincerely hope these features requests make it into the product in the near term.

    Thanks!

This should be a very simple enhancement and would add a lot of value...

Thanks for confirming, Paul and apologies it's taken a little time to round back to your message. We have another idea that you may like to join for filtering the report by contact group.

With the request around bad debts - is there a particular way you are handling these in Xero atm?

Potentially adding Payments/Credits column to the report will help with this? This way when you run the report you could then re-order by the Payments/Credits column to view those that have paid the most > least.

Thanks! That definitely helps solve that issue. :)

It would also be great, if the following capabilities were available:
    - include ability to summarize by group when customers are within a group. We have multiple customers that are tracked by department and on this report, we want to see the total sales by customer, not by department within a customer group. The way it worked in Quickbooks is that you would see the group amount and then indented would be the department detail. This is a pretty big deal and is requiring me to create two reports to get everything that I need for sales reporting. One report being top sales and the other being Sales by Customer Group. It would be ideal to see all of this information in one report like I could get from Quickbooks by default.
    - include ability to customize the filter with the Top Customers format. It worked great for the most part with the default filters, but bad debt amounts are showing in the report and it would be ideal to exclude those bad debt amounts.

I agree. All development needs to do is allow a negative Expense Claim.

This will not matter much to very small businesses, but the larger the company, the more critical this feature is going to be. We are new to Xero and the only feature that we are needing from your top tier license is Xero Expenses. And probably half of the value that I was wanting was to be offload the expense approval process to the employee's manager. But without pending approval notifications to an employee's manager, this really is not possible and the burden of manually getting approvals for employee expenses will still fall on accounting. This is definitely not where it belongs and hope that Xero enhances this functionality soon.

I will also put a plug in for adding a default mileage rate. This should be very simple to add and would prevent the employees from having to remember the mileage rate each time they enter a mileage expense.
