Hi everyone, coming back across this idea we do want to confirm at present for Sales you have Invoice numbers that do need to be unique in Xero. You could ask you customer to reference this as a look up. If you'd like to change this, you can set the Prefix and starting number from within your invoice settings and you'll find you also have options to set this for Quotes and Purchase Orders - More on this here
The 'Reference' field of a transaction is slightly different and does not need to be unique, many businesses use this in slightly different ways and I want to be open that we don't have plans for changing this behaviour anytime soon.
Appreciate there are some that would like to see a numbering sequence for bills and I'd recommend adding support to this idea where this is represented.

There is a critical area where Xero is lacking - no nominal audit trail. For finding errors, reconciliation, having a unique identifier for each transaction is an essential element to an accounting system.
Given that this field by definition, must be in the back end of Xero is it immensely frustrating it is not available to users.
I do not mean journal reporting or other available reports, I mean the UNIQUE field for each transaction. IE Bill raised - DR Admin £10 ID 0001, CR Aged Creditors £10 ID 0002.
From my understanding of coding I am confident this field must be within Xero but just not available.
If you use an audit trail for payroll in Australia, why not for the main flagship accounting package?

Hey everyone, thanks so much for sharing all your ideas and detailed suggestions for a comprehensive Audit Trail Report.
Through some of the comments in this discussion we wanted to highlight the Journal Report that may help with visibility of detail some are after. We've taken on board your thoughts on how this could be enhanced, like including an 'edited date' column and improving the export to Excel, however this is not in the roadmap right now.
Being open, providing a complete audit trail of every single event and change within an organisation is not in our plans.
That said, it’d help to gather interest in specific items you'd like to see added within the history and notes and I've shared links to a few ideas that have already been started on the platform. We welcome you to add your vote, or start a new idea for those that'd be…

Cannot believe there is still no Audit trail available when it has been requested for more than 3 years. This is why Xero still lags behind Sage: perhaps if the marketing budget was diverted to creating this very basic report they would notice an uptick in Business users.

I am surprised this is not available, having to finish off reports in excel when reporting by tracking category is disappointing
