e-invoicing Germany
From 1st January 2025 businesses in Germany must be able to receive e-invoices and this function does not exist in the Global edition we use for our German clients.
We need this functionality setting up as a matter of urgency.
Thanks for raising the idea with us. Our team are aware of the mandate of eInvoicing for Germany. While we don't have immediate work planned at this stage our plan is to support any Peppol-enabled region in the long term and we are paying close attention to the interest from users on this idea. We'll be sure to update of any progress surrounding this for you, here.
The mandate currently states "The new legal regulation currently contains no specifications for the electronic transmission of electronic invoices. An email inbox should therefore initially be sufficient to receive an electronic invoice."
Based on this, currently with Xero an eInvoice could be received by using our Email to bills service, or by including the invoice as an attachment and sending to your organisation's Files library. On agreement with your suppliers you could share your bills, or files library email with them so they can send invoices directly to your organisation.

Hi Kelly,
unfortunately the e-invoicing is not an idea of the German community, it is a mandatory change of the invoicing in Germany.
And it is not only that we need a mail box to save mails. Here is the text from my tax advisory:
E-invoicing obligation from 01.01.2025: All invoices for domestic transactions between companies (B2B) must be issued in a standardized electronic format from this date. An invoice in PDF format only is not permitted.
- 2-year transition period: Invoices can still be issued in paper form until the end of 2026.
- However, the exception does not apply to the obligation to receive, process and store e-invoices.As a Xero user we need an electronic exchange format as off january 1st 2025.
Here is an article which maybe helps a bit more:
https://www.verband-e-rechnung.org/archiv/fachartikel/12-regeln-fuer-den-gobd-konformen-elektronischen-rechnungsaustausch/3. legibility
Electronic invoices must be legible and remain legible, particularly for tax audit purposes. In this context, it must be ensured that invoices in formats such as XML or EDIFACT can be displayed legibly to the auditor's eye and are therefore also verifiable as part of a visual inspection. The taxable company is therefore recommended to provide a suitable display program (viewer) together with the electronic invoice. As this is a regulation and as a company we need to act accordingly, we need the feature to send and receive e-invoices. otherwise Xero is not the provider of choice anymore.
Thank you for your recognition and time!

If XERO cannot offer this we might have problem to use it for our European entities.

In 2025 there will be a change in Europe that will require all B2B companies to be able to receive and send electronic invoices. Electronic invoices mean that the invoice must be in XML format. It would be great if there was a feature that lets us choose between different sending options. And also the feature that Xero can read XML invoices.

It is essential that for Xero to be viable global product it keeps up with global regulations.
