Hi everyone, appreciate all the engagement here so far. It has been a while, so wanted to update the status of this idea here. We understand that when you’re managing contacts, having a clear way to separate a legal entity name from a trading name can be important for keeping your records accurate.
The suggestion here is to add a dedicated Legal Name / Business Registered Name field to contact records, so this information can be stored separately and used when managing documents, reporting, and client details.
We’ve moved this to Gaining Support so we can continue tracking interest and gather more examples from businesses that need to manage different legal and trading names in their workflows.

We appreciate the workaround suggestion, Anis, however the legal/trading name field is not searchable and so it is not usable for staff in Australian practices. We should be able to add a column in XPM so we can view a client's legal and trading name without opening the client. This field should also be editable in XPM so that it applies to both Xero and non-Xero clients.

Hi Juanita, thanks for sharing this suggestion. We understand that when you’re managing client records, having a clear way to separate legal names from trading names can be helpful.
The suggestion here is to add a dedicated Trading As / DBA field to contact records, so this information can be stored separately and be easier to find when managing invoices, statements, and client details.
We’ve moved this to Gaining Support so we can continue tracking interest and gather more examples from practices that use trading names as part of their day-to-day workflows.

Completely agree with this one. This is critical for Australian accounting and bookkeeping firms as a legal requirement of lodging Tax and BAS with the ATO is that it be done under the client's legal name. Unfortunately, Xero is not currently set up for us to be both compliant with the ATO and usable for staff and clients who know themselves by trading name only.
The Client Name field in XPM should be Legal name while the Trading Name should be a searchable and reportable column that can be viewed without opening the client file. This should be editable in XPM since this is the source of truth and the platform via which Tax and BAS are lodged with the ATO.

100%. There is no point having a custom field if it can't be made a viewable column and be searchable.
Xero, so we have an update on this?
