Contacts - Import with contact Group
To provide the option to import new contact(s) to an existing group.
Purpose: Users can easily put the imported contacts into the existing group once the file is uploaded into Xero.

This would be a huge time saver feature if enabled. Currently having to do this manually and it wastes so much time compared to being able to do a bulk import.

This would be a very useful function - the group function is not as useful without being able to set via import.

Sad to see , over a year of requests for this feature, what I would have thought is a simple feature but no action. Just started to bulk import multiple contacts with a view to separating them into groups and there's no facility to do this. Frustrating!

There is a workaround:
TRY THIS FIRST IN "Demo Company" BEFORE DOING IT IN YOUR PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT.
Step 1: Create the CSV that you want to upload for a single group. Save it as something like "Final".
Step 2: Open the "Final" CSV again and re-save it as "Initial Upload". Then add a new temp column called Group. Populate all rows with the unique group name. Then add a another column called Concat, in that column, use the concatenate function to join together first name and group name. Then replace the first name column with the data from the Concat column, paste values only. Your first name column should now look something like this: "GroupName James". Delete the two columns that you created. Then you upload that CSV.
Step 3: Go into "All Contacts" and use the search function to look for the unique group name that you have used in the upload.
Step 4: Select all the contacts using the select all checkbox, then select "Add to Group".
Step 5: Now that all the contacts are in a group, re-upload the Final CSV that you created earlier. This is the one that just has the first name without the group name.
You should now have all the contacts with their correct names assigned to the group that you wanted.

I support this update 100%. I have 500 shareholders I need to load into Xero contacts in their own "Shareholders" group.
Presently I have to do this manually because they cannot be uploaded via CSV file into a "Group" nor can they be loaded into Contacts and moved to a group at a later date.
This brings me to also ask for the ability to identity a Contact within their details page which group OR GROUPS they belong too. eg. have a tick box on the contact entry page to select which groups they belong to and then be able to run a specific group list report.
Thank you in advance for getting this request escalated.

I use Xero for a non-profit so we don't have customers, but we do have donors which I have added as a group. I can download donor information from paypal, instagram, etc. and need to import the donor group with the info. It's very cumbersome not to have this.

Is this available at the moment?

Yes, it is a must. Other issues with Contract groups:
1. There is no audit trail when a contact has been included or excluded from a group.
2. When you export contact, it does not show which group(s) it is on.
The grouping feature is almost useless without the above.

This is very important and would be incredibly useful, please have this option included.

Extremely important. Groups are rather useless without the ability to quickly and easily import contacts into them at the time of import. Manually adding 3000+ contacts to the appropriate groups manually isn't an attractive option.

I thought it goes without saying you can import the contacts including their grouping. I have now 800 contact that I need to group manually. Makes zero sense.

I am left incredulous that the contract group is not included in the CSV file. We have 25 000 contacts - how can I edit these into groups, doing them one at a time?

I'm actually amazed this isn't already a feature! I've literally just exported our contacts to re-import with the correct groups and I'm shocked you can't do this
-
Gemma Sheed commented
This is critical, absolutly pointless in uploading a template file if you then have to manually go through and add them to a group.

A must have feature, a huge timesaver

This feature is critical for our business needs both within xero - as well as softwares that integrate with xero that rely on contact groups
-
Nikki Coulter commented
This should already be an option on the csv. This is critical for organizing contacts.

It would be great to add groups into the export CSV file

I have to find each individual contact (over 500) to put into their respective groups. Being able to do them in a csv would be game changing.
