Reporting - Filter the Profit and Loss by Contact
When exporting the profit and loss transactions it would be amazing for one of the columns to show the Contact in isolation rather than merging the contact and description into one field. This would allow much easier spreadsheet analysis by contact.

This is essential - we track our product costs so it should be simple to run a customer specific report showing the gross profit. All the data is there!
Can you sort ASAP please Xero!!

Being able to understand profit and loss for individual pieces of work or for individual clients is critical to manage our business. This feature is available out of the box within Freeagent and I can't believe this can't be done in Xero.

I can't believe that you can't complete a profit and loss by client report with this software. I am allocating every transaction to a specific client, therefore, you should be able to produce a basic report showing what materials the client has be assigned to against what payments they have made showing a simple calculation on how much profit or loss each project has lost. What are you supposed to do enter the information once into Xero and then again in to an excel spreadsheet to get this information, very long winded !

The ability to generate a profit & loss by customer report. We track the costs associated with each sale so it would be great to see each customers profit & loss.

In a product sales business (with Tracked Products), it's essential to be able to know the profit by customer. Why is it not considered a high priority to have this report?

Considering XERO allows us to allocate expenses to a customer, it's appaling that we cannot use that data.
I have a workaround that can work for some people, but it has limitations.
MENU > ACCOUTING > ADVANCED > TRACKING CATEGORIES.
Create a few categories. In my case I wanted to track profitability for certain types of clients. Ideally per client, but at least as a group it would help.
I created a category for that client type (e.g. Private Label Client). For costs relating to that client type, in the purchase invoices (per expense line), you add the category. You have to do the same per sales invoice per line. You can then open a Profit & Loss statement and filter by the category. Annoying, but it gets you profitability by groups. Hope thats helpful. -

Profit & Loss by contact - we have clients that really need this report to help run their business on a daily basis and want to leave Xero based on the lack of this report. Would be great to get this report in place asap!

Profit and loss by contact - it would be great if the p & l could be run and filtered by contact so that all costs & income are brought up in one simple report.

Hi Kelly,
Am I right in thinking that the Income by Contact only looks at the turnover for a contact rather than the profit?
In my own business a high turnover client is not necessarily a high profit one as some of the more expensive items that I supply have lower margins than cheaper ones. -

Vital....allows decisions and discussions where to add value.
Better understanding as to how to lift margins / replicate in lower performing customers / Reps -

Yes definitely - It is essential to analyse client's profit margins - especially when dealing with lots of products and services for each client.
If all costs are logged correctly against the client - which they are - and we know their revenue - It should be relatively simple to produce a list of clients with their gross profits.
We can then target sales towards the most profitable clients
At the moment it has to be done manually -

It would be great to be able to run a profit by contact report. You already have the ability to add purchase prices for different products on xero and an income by customer report, but would be great to see gross profit for each customer, to know what sort of customers are the most profitable.

Within our Xero platform, we have "Sales/Contacts" which are contacts which we invoice. Outside of Xero, we report on the figure of the invoice vs a budget amount.
Ideally we would like one view of what what invoiced vs the budget created.
We have used the budget against the P&L but we need to budget against individual "Sales/Contacts". -

I cant seem to find a quicker way to find out out how much profit I am making from a customer,
I need to know when I am creating a quote how much I am making !!! I have all my product codes set up with cost & Sell prices. So unsure who to find this as I am quoting. Only way so far is if I copy an invoice to purchase order. but thats too late!
