Chart of Accounts - Import new accounts from csv
Please give the option to import a list of new accounts to add to the existing Chart of Accounts.
We have created a new department with a couple dozen new accounts.
I'd like to be able to upload from a csv file rather than entering one by one manually since I already have the listed in a spreadsheet.
Currently, the only option is to reimport the entire Chart of Accounts with the new accounts added to the list. To me that is an unnecessary risk of overwriting hundreds of existing accounts.5 votesAppreciate your interest in this idea, team. I want to confirm that it's possible to import multiple new accounts to your existing chart of accounts through the use of a CSV import.
You'll want to export your existing chart of accounts, where you can add the new ones to the sheet. Save this as CSV, then re-import to your organisation - We have information on importing to your chart of accounts here, and you can test in the demo company if you'd like to try this out and view the results first.

History & notes - chart of accounts
It would be great (if not already available - I can't find it) to get an audit report whereby we can see changes made to a set of accounts after they have been submitted.
4 votesHi community, we have now released a change to the History & notes report so you can view changes to the Name or Type of an Account on screen, without having to click into the line of the report. This includes where you have updated chart of accounts via an import.
Thanks for sharing and feeding back what would help you working with Xero, here.

Upload files to a chart of account code
Upload files to an account code in the chart of accounts, rather than to a transaction or a contact. Thinking in particular for lease and loan schedules and calculations, breakdown of accruals / prepayments, pdf bank statements to bank accounts.
1 voteHey community, 👋 thanks for your support on this idea, I'm popping in to switch it across to delivered!
Simply click on the figure in the YTD column on the chart of accounts screen and it opens a detail page with the file upload button on it.
Thanks again for your feedback. It helps us to continue shaping the future of reports here at Xero.

Chart of accounts - Ability to use a - not a in codes
Codes are set up as ***-yy which isn't logical to type. I guess it's an accounting convention but I can type 501.50 much easier (one hand on the numeric keypad and no need to move it to the'-') than 501-50.
For non-accountants, and IT people 501.50 is the logical way to type and enter these codes.
2 votesHi Kevin, you can use symbols including '-' or '.' when setting up your chart of account codes. This applies when importing or adding a singular account within Xero. If you need any help with this I'd recommend connecting with our specialists at Xero Support who can get more information to help with your org.

Hi team, you can already set up a loan as a bank account, or as a non-current liability in Xero. We have some help on this in Xero Central.

Chart of accounts - Ability to export chart of accounts to .csv file
It would be great if the Export button in Xero could export the chart of accounts to .csv such that the Type of account appears in the .csv file as it is displayed in Xero.
Xero Support advises
- that right now it’s not possible to export the chart of accounts with the account type exactly as it is in Xero; and
- it doesn’t look like this idea has been raised as yet. This really is not a new idea it is only an idea to have the Export button in Xero produce an export file that represents the…
3 votesYou can now use the new export button on the Chart of Accounts page to export any HQ library chart templates. Both Xero and custom templates can be exported to .csv files. To find out more check out this Xero Central article!
