Hi Kirsty, having looped in with the team this placeholder is not something that has been developed in new invoicing and isn't on the immediate plans at present.
For the time being, you'll be able to use the shortcut shared in classic invoicing. We'll re-open the idea to continue building traction in this here and I'll update you if there is any progress surrounding placeholders that'd help here.

Hi everyone, thanks to everyone that completed and fed back through our earlier survey. We appreciate you sharing needs in sequential invoice numbering and will continue to consider these needs as we evolve invoicing in Xero.
Right now, we want to be upfront that there are no direct changes planned for how invoice numbers are assigned.
We'll keep monitoring interest of this here and will update if there are any developments.

In my opinion, it would be even better to not assign invoice numbers at all until the invoice is approved, per this suggestion:

[month-1] and [month+1] no longer work in New Invoicing! Please please please fix this Xero team.
