Thanks for your feedback about setting working days for part-time employees, everyone.
We’re pleased to share that working patterns are now in development, with the first release planned for later this year.
You’ll be able to set a one-week work pattern for each employee, which will automatically be used for leave and public holiday calculations in the pay run. For this first release, you’ll still need to update the employee’s pay template separately to reflect their standard working hours.
We plan to build on this by connecting working patterns with standard hours in the pay run and supporting a broader range of working patterns. We’ll share another update as the release gets closer.

Xero why oh why must you punish the AU users please just give us this......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0urboRDBIc I tried the BETA for rostering. I am sure its great for that. I dont need to roster. I need a work pattern so my staff can apply for leave without me having to maintain a spreadsheet to calculate the amount of leave.

Please Xero implement this. Its pretty crazy that this doesn't exist. I have to manage leave requests in a spreadsheet. I have been using another finance system for several years and never imagined I would have to go back to managing leave requests this way.
The functionality already exists in other regions look up learning "Set up a working pattern template". I have been with Xero for maybe two months. this lack of functionality already has me considering leaving.

Hi everyone, thanks for your continued feedback about managing working patterns for part-time employees.
We’re pleased to share that we plan to begin rolling out working patterns in AU Payroll later this year.
The first release will allow you to set a one-week work pattern for each employee. This pattern will automatically be used for leave and public holiday calculations in the pay run. At this stage, you’ll still need to update the employee’s pay template separately to reflect their standard working hours.
We plan to build on this foundation by connecting working patterns with standard hours in the pay run and supporting a broader range of working patterns. We’ll share more details as the first release gets closer.

It looks like the approach from Xero in AU is try and get people to by the rostering solution to try and resolve this issue as it has some features which people are screaming for in this thread (and several other like i). I tried out the rostering solution in beta. Perhaps it could work for a large organisation with many employees and complex rostering needs or where rostering is critical. We own a hair salon and it would just add significant work. Half of our employees are part time. Time and attendance and leave management is useless in Xero without work patterns. You cannot even get staff to apply for leave. It just doesnt work. Who would have thought in 2025 where you have an AI agent that can help you with invoicing yet you need to manage your staff work patterns in a separate system and work out leave requests with a calculator.

Just so you can get an appreciation of just how frustrating this is. Not only can you not have employee's self-service for leave requests - because the leave requests are nonsense without a work pattern- for the current easter long weekend I had to manually adjust every single pay slip because of the Good Friday p/h for which we are not even open. Xero just apportions the total hours across the week and applies this amount to any day which are a p/h. This is actually a completely useless feature and costs time as opposed to saving it. Essentially all small business retail have staff with variable hours. You have to. Its not a 9-5 world therefore I have to adjust every single pay slip any time there is a public holiday else you end up with nonsense hours. As mentioned we dont even open on public holiday but I still have to adjust the payslips for these days. ALL OF THIS IS CAUSED BY XERO NOT HAVING THE CONCEPT OF A WORK PATTERN. Why is it taking so long to resolve this.
