Invoices - Date columns for individual line items
Ability to add date columns for individual line items.
Purpose: To make users easily put a date for each item. The scenario that can benefit users is for them to show a specific date of when the product/service is delivered.
Hi everyone, we appreciate the interest in being able to add dates to individual lines of an invoice. Currently our team are focused on improvements to new invoicing and we want to be upfront we don't have any plans for adding a date column to the details grid within an invoice atm.
Right now if you do require dates for individual line items we'd recommend adding these within the Description field of the line.
We will continue to review this as we continue to evolve the product. If there are any updates or changes, we'll share this all with you through the idea here. Thanks

I'll reiterate what many others have said here. It is really difficult to recommend Xero to a client when it doesn't have some basic functionality that is available in other products

This is a show-stopper for me, previous invoicing software I've used, many different pieces of software, have always had dates for line items - it's virtually essential on monthly/periodic billing for service industries, as the date delivered is a key piece of information. Including it in the description is completely inappropriate and breaks searchability, as it needs to be accessible via the API or exports as an absolutely key data field of the invoice line. No Xero for my organisation until this is added.

To better support correct service tracking and invoicing, I, like many others here, recommend your development team implement a dedicated date field at the line-item level. Capturing the true date a service is provided is essential for organizations delivering services across multiple days. Relying on the description field for this purpose, as Kelly Munroe suggested, compromises data integrity, reporting, and searchability, especially when sorting across varied client invoices. A static, filterable date field would streamline reporting, i.e., how much of a service item was provided between two specific dates, without using invoice dates as it will not capture correct information, especially when one invoices the following month for services made the previous month. It will also support consistency and significantly improve functionality for users who may depend on detailed service documentation. It’s easier to have the information in one software vs having multiple software databases.
Kelly Munro, on Nov 18, 2024, you stated, “Currently our team are focused on improvements to new invoicing”. With 187 votes already, don’t you believe THIS IS AN IMPROVEMENT?

Have the agility to add more columns onto sales invoices to add additional information such as date and ticket number columns (separate columns to the description column)

I am so disappointed that Xero missed this function.... All people here in Australia working in the healthcare industry need it. I just signed up with Xero and will spend another couple of days trying to figure this out. If I can't solve it, I am changing to MYOB

Thats a shame Kelly, this a very convenient function, especially for businesses that provide services opposed to goods, such as NDIS businesses.
QuickBooks provide this option in their invoicing, and they are half the price of Xero. -

I am a property photographer. It is crucial for me to be able list perhaps 20 shoots per month on a single invoice, starting each with the date the shoot took place. Having only options like 'quantity' is of no use. I am in a service sector, not sales!

Hello Kelly Munro not a convincing answer to the problem. This has been an issue for several years. I am in the process of transitioning to Xero from Reckons and thank heavens found out early that there is no column for service date. Shocked and deeply disappointed!!! We are a service base company that attend to businesses in hospitality, age care, just to name a few, multiple times a week and it essential that we have a column for date of service on our monthly invoice. When I realised that this not an option, which in fact should be a simple basic feature on an invoice I have decided that I will be remaining with Reckons. To say this is not in your future plans is simply LAZY and CONCEITED!

Hi Kelly,
We're a certified app partner and I must say this is the most commonly asked questions by our users who have integrated our app with Xero. Like myself they cannot believe that this functionality doesn't exist at all on Xero. A lot of service industries rely on date entries for easy viewing on the invoice. It seems a no brainer to me in terms of functionality that should compliment products and services. I'm sure you could make it configurable as an option, and would be a great improvement to the new invoicing.
Couple of days of dev work would save you a lot of customers going to Quickbooks

I have to agree with many of the comments below.
A simple feature and the dicussion has been onging for far too long.
In its absence, I can add 4 hours to my invoicing time weekly.
Please, it really cannot be this difficult -

March 2025 We just change from QuickBooks to Xero and this simple feature is so important to our operation we are considering switching back. Wero is not vey user friendly and more expensive than QuickBooks, but the problems we had with QB we can probably live with. Please add this simple feature and look after you clients. QuicBooks can do it, it can't be that hard.

We are a service industry and would really like the ability the have a column on the invoice that can have a date entered. Currently if we have a big job's invoice that has multiple dates for work done. I have to enter the date in the description field as a separate line, on a large invoice this looks messy. It would be so much better if the column next to the description was a date column.

This would really be a useful feature to add these fields and from a reporting aspect would make it so much easier!

Haha what a joke... what an absolute joke... it would require the most minimal amount of effort to add this feature and YEARS later you still won't do it. Absolute clown school.

This is really poor form. It seems like a trivial thing to implement and widely used. Time for me to leave the Xero fold...

For the record and to be clear, XERO never listened to any of this, the response above only came in after I opened a support case today and requested a response to this 4-year-old request, it was only then someone wrote the response above indicating that XERO has no intention to bother with the date field.
For any person writing new comments, ... please note that your comments are likely not be read unless you request this to be updated through a support ticket. -

I have now cancelled my subscription with Xero due to inaction on this matter.
It is a very simple feature to implement and there is no reasonable excuse as to why continued failure to implement the feature. For my particular situation it is necessary to have dates of service per line item to meet invoice guidelines which helps to create a clear picture for clients.
I will continue to use InvoiceNinja as they have this feature.

For what it's worth; This is a Critical issue, not having it on the horizon for fix after almost 4 years of customer requesting and complaining about this is a total ignorance.
