Tracking - Increase the number of tracking categories
I have a real estate client who wants to track clientID and Postcode but also Agent name and property value range. I can only use 2 categories and so have had to make a number of Item codes for each agent 30+ codes per agent in order to do this. If we could have more than 2 tracking categories that would be great!

Hi everyone, we appreciate all the interest in Tracking. As widely used as this feature is we have no plans at this point to develop and extend the current limitations of Tracking in Xero.
As some here may have explored - there are connected apps that may serve some of the needs of Tracking, as well as Xero Projects for those looking to monitor and record finite business projects or jobs.
If there's any change, we'll return here to update.
You're welcome to continue to share detail of how increasing options for tracking could benefit your business, however we want to be transparent in our position, so you can make the best decision as needed for your business.

Very disappointing ! It is not so much finite jobs, but broader analysis, job, market segment, state, salesman etc etc

YES PLEASE! Driving me crazy having only 2. Very limiting!

Unbelievable that you can only have two header categories and two archived!!! Why? there are 4 states with 4 shops per state. How would this benefit the business - by having accurate sub category profit/loss and better reporting - for "beautiful accounting". This is a no brainer.

Yes please. We already use two categories in Xero accounts so cannot now set up Employee Groups in Payroll........! We wanted to get Payroll back in house, Sage Cloud doesn't allow you to payroll benefits (!!) so thought we'd use Xero as we are now using Xero for our accounts system. It's unbelievable that we cannot use more than two tracking categories when four are available. I think Payroll should be a standalone program

Hello Xero Communities manager, Appreciate last year you commented that increasing the number of tracking categories is not in your plans. As you can see, there is a lot of interest in this. Is Xero planning to revisit this at some point in the short or medium term? As a non profit, we have a number of different obligations to track and this would transform the use of Xero within the sector.

Surely it is a simple request to add more tracking categories, at the VERY least, one more. I honestly believe this is one small area where XERO could take it the next level. Why not add another two? The benefit to customers is huge in terms of keeping track of multiple project costs.

Hello,
Having the option to add more tracking categories is such a simple request, and i can see by all the comments below that we are not the only ones affected by the lack of features. -

While we can work with 2 active tracking categories, we have an issue with the limit Xero imposes for archived tracking categories. We are a not-for-profit and every few years we get a massive grant that has to be broken down into different projects (tracking category one), some of which are complex and need further breaking down (tracking category two). But once that funding period is over we need to archive these two categories and start two more.

Agree with all of the sentiment below about the need for this. We have been waiting since 2014 for a third tracking category to be added, which would allow us to accomplish something closer to true fund accounting for our nonprofit clients. I'd love to see Xero reconsider their decision to stick with only two. Even one more would be hugely helpful to us.

Hi,
We really need more than 2 tracking categories. These are not "projects" and are simply additional ways to classify expenses, typically for tax purposes that fall outside of or in addition to the chart of accounts.
In addition to Xero's premium price relative to competitors, this motivates us to consider moving to cheaper accounting software that doesn't have such onerous restrictions.
Please reconsider.

I agree with so many others that it is very poor that Xero allows only 2 tracking categories. Not very advanced software at all. Quickbooks allows many tracking categories. I want Xero to explain why, technically, it is so hard to have more categories. To me just seems lazy and not wanting to spend the development money on something that a clear majority of customers want. The end result of accounting is reporting to help owners/managers, Xero says it prides itself on the usefulness of its reports, but here is a clear inherent failure to produce what people want. So WHY WHY WHY doesn't Xero fix this? WHAT IS THE REASON ???

i think it’s important to add few more tracking too
we currently use one field for tracking for sales (yes, xero does not have “user field” to display who create the transaction and we need to use tracking field for it) and the other tracking for different category
just like custom field, i think it’s useful for most of user and it’s quite easy to add…

Having a third or fourth tracking category would be a huge help.

Just came across this now. As others have said, once a business grows, there is a need to be able to run more advanced and detailed reporting.
We are in that position now. The Projects function of Xero is not what we need, we just want to be able to add "labels" to sales invoices to run reports from different points of view to improve sales analysis. We can't do it with just two active tracking categories, we need more! Why is this not even considered by Xero? -

Definitely needs more tracking categories. Clients that are rapidly growing are having to cease using the software. Business in the transport industry are a good example. They create tracking categories for each asset. Hence, once Xero's tracking category limits are up, they have no choice as profitability is assessed on a per asset basis.

We really need a third tracking category option to be added. We love the Xero product and it suits our needs in every other aspect but if we can't have an additional tracking category we will need to move to another product.
I would appreciate an update from the development team if this will be considered as the last update was a year ago.

I can't see how some of my clients who are rapidly growing would want to continue to use Xero if they don't quickly integrate multiple tracking categories into the software!!
