Xero Tax (UK) - Make available to businesses, not only to Partners
Ability to have Xero Tax for businesses, not only for Partners

Hi community, we appreciate the continued attention this idea is receiving. While our team will continue to review this idea, Xero Tax remains a Partner only product with tools and capabilities that help Xero Partners serve their clients with ease, and we don't have immediate intentions of changing this. Again, we'd like to encourage that if you're not currently connected to a Xero Partner you can find one that can serve your advisor needs through our Advisor Directory. If there is any change planned we will update you of this, here.
Also to note, our current position on Xero Tax does not relate to our MTD IT program and we'll be providing further information for this separately on this idea. Thanks

I totally agree with Sam Wakeling. Xero Tax UK should be available to Businesses and Landlords and not only to Partners. I am surprised they have not done this as there is a lot of software out there that does permit this. They also need to look at their website which in my opinion does not make this clear. It would not surprise me if they lose 1/3 of their customers as there are a large number of customers who would prefer to do this. If they allow MTD for Vat why are they reluctant to allow it for Tax?

I ran across this issue recently. I didn't want to file accounts but create a set of draft accounts as requested by one of the managers in the company that I work at.
I think I understand why Xero is taking the approach that it is on Xero Tax but it quite annoying. Especially considering that other software providers allow you to as echoed in many of the comments.
Though I think users could technically get around this issue by having someone register as a partner and then enabling Xero Tax. It is not guaranteed and is a unnecessary hurdle created by Xero. You shouldn't have to jump through hoops to get access to a feature that is already available.
Xero is such good software but there are some choices that the company makes that are just frustrating from a user standpoint. As Malcom comment mentioned Xero will actually put attention to issues where customers complain alot and loudly. I recommend complain as loud as you can on this issue just like Malcolm suggested.

Being able to file tax and corp tax returns is a necessity. We can do this ourselves, don’t need an Xero partner, anyone got alternative solutions for this as ideally don’t want to leave Xero

Agreeing with what others have posted, this is required functionality for businesses of all sizes who have the skills to file their own accounts and tax. So I too will now be looking at alternatives. Shame because I really like Xero.

I have already commented on this - such a shame. I have had to investigate other software and I will be moving onto it at the end of my tax year for - less than the cost of my current Xero subscription. I would never have investigated the market and discovered a lower cost option if this functionality had been made available to me.
I have used Xero since 2013, have recommended it and set it up across 9 other businesses and a non-profit.
Xero will be losing a >12 year customer and all the referrals I created for them. Does not make business sense.

Seems that Xero is not interested in supporting businesses who are not connected to a Xero Partner and this will leave us with no option but to explore other options instead of Xero - as I suspect will many other current Xero subscribers. Xero should be supporting all subscribers and not just Xero Partners.

This is even more critical now, more than ever, as HMRC's online service for filing tax returns is closing in March 2026. Therefore businesses have to do this via software. So Xero tax needs to be made available to businesses not just partners.

Agreed with all the comments below, I am accountant and complete accounts for a charity and a partnership, so am happy to file these myself without the help or cost of a Xero partner. It would be a real shame to have to leave Xero but I will be considering other options if this issue isn't resolved.

It seems a little prohibitive to your customer base to funnel clients through a route of only certified book keepers / accountants that can submit Corporation and Income Tax returns on your behalf. It’s a shame, as the software is really easy to use and pick up but now I find myself having to seriously consider cancelling and using an alternative that's not so user friendly but offers the flexibility of the end user submitting their own returns, and not being forced down a specific route. A lot of businesses have built up long relationships with 3rd party or internal accountants who are very good at their job and should have the opportunity to continue to provide that service without having to jump through additional hoops to become a partner. I fear you are alienating a large section of the business population who could be an important revenue stream for you. It can still be a selling point for those partnered accountants for ease of set up and I estimate 60 – 65% of new customers would still choose the easy route and select a recommended partner, but the fact remains it shouldn’t be mandated and the customer should have the flexibility to choose what’s right for them at the point of time that their circumstances demand. Xero TAX needs to be made available to the end user responsible for the subscription.

Corporation tax return submission to HMRC and Companies house to become available for each individual business instead available to accountant only. Many businesses have got their internal accountant and it is no fair to spend additional fun unreasonably.

I have notification that the current HMRC online filling will close in March 2026. I have been filing my own HMRC and Companies House for years now and not allowing me to do it using Xero will cost me extra money every year.
If I can do my VAT via Xero my not these additional things? -

Unfortunately for Xero I can see a loss in clients due to tax returns being digital from April 2026.
It appears illogical that a small business is prohibited from completing their own tax return using Xero, while being compelled to pay an accountant or bookkeeper (via the xero partner program) to undertake a task that most businesses are capable or performing independently.
From a cost-effective view, it would make more sense for my business to change software that facilitates the completion of yearly tax returns rather than incurring the expense of paying an accountant to complete a task that I am already capable of doing. -

Very small business here and I chose Xero because the government website stated that you could file tax returns automatically using it, now it turns out you can't... very disappointing and I will be cancelling the subscription.

Totally agree with all the comments. i've recommended Xero for every company i'm involved with but will now have to move all of them to other providers who offer this functionality

I find it difficult to understand how Xero can provide the ability to file for MTD for IT but not for Limited companies to meet their statutory filing requirements.
My husband has a Limited company and I have a job elsewhere, but I am a qualified accountant, I have previously filed the accounts using HMRC Gateway and been ok with this, but HMRC now has a notification saying that this will not be available from 31 March 2026.
I really like how Xero works for record keeping, reports & payments, etc, but it should be more than this for a Limited company, many of which employ qualified accountants. I find it difficult to understand why it does not have the ability to file statutory accounts, ixbrl and a corporation tax return to the company paying for the software. As an up to date qualified accountant I cannot see why I would be expected by my software provider to engage and pay for a Xero Partner to do this for when when they are not asking MTD income tax cases to do the same. I thought that from going to Xerocon in the past, Xero tax came about via an acquisition of a company that provided the software for Limited companies to file their statutory accounts and corporation tax return but now Xero have acquired that company the facility is only open to Xero Partners.
If legislation does not require that the accounts and corporation tax are submitted by a practicing accountant (just like IT MTD), why is this a requirement for companies. I have previously used the HMRC facility to file, but with this being no longer available from 31 March 2026 I am going to have to look for software that will file the accounts and CT600, or look at alternative software but I really like Xero for every other aspect .

It has taken me a few hours to find out that if I do not engage a Xero "partner", I cannot report directly to HMRC for MDT, as I will be required to do from April 2026, particularly as I am not VAT registered, and have no need to be. I understand that Xero is promoting the business of their "partners", but that is no good to me. I do not need to pay for accountancy services. If Xero will not change their policy on this then I will find another platform that will meet my requirements. It is bad enough that HMRC require me to pay for the software for MDT, let alone that that platform then try and make me pay for accountancy/book keeping!

Same comments as the below - I will be looking for an alternative to Xero when filing for small entities is closed down by HMRC March 2026 because I don't want to pay the absolutely ridiculous fees for someone else to press a few buttons on my behalf. It's annoying as it is using the micro entity service to simply copy and past from Xero, but being directed to hiring one of the Xero partners by their support for what essentially would be a simple MTD interface setup that they already have with other services makes me want to quit the service as it suggests they get a better margin from promoting Xero Tax to their partners plus pushing their regular clients to hire those firms.

Xero is leaving a substantial subscription revenue opportunity on the table here - a critical oversight that on which competitors will certainly capitalise.
I do not need a 'Partner' to press a button for me. I need the functionality in Xero available for me in Xero to do this myself as I do with VAT, PAYE, CIS.
This means that I, and many others, will go directly to Xero's competitors for this service - crazy.
Xero's competitors will gain Xero's revenue and market share as customers move over to a SAAS that offers this simple functionality. Xero is missing out on a clear upsell and retention opportunity with their customers.
From a marketing perspective - word of mouth, influencers, creators - would all be making it clear that Xero does not offer this simple functionality and this could lead to reputational damage and further revenue leakage.
Some help is required in the CRO domain here to make it clear to Product Management as to the extent of the potential losses in terms of revenue and reputation from not having this functionality available.

With the announcement that UK Statory Accounts and Tax Returns will no longer be able to be filed via the government gateway. Could Xero make available its filing for UK tax returns and accounts available for companies to prepare and file their own returns themselves without the need for Agent IDs.
