Contacts & Invoices — Stop blank email greetings: use the customer name without entering it twice
I just entered my customer’s name to create an invoice. Why does the invoice email still say “Hello,” with no name?
Creating a contact directly from an invoice makes this especially frustrating:
Enter “John Doe” in the invoice’s Contact field.
Select “Create ‘John Doe’ as a new contact.”
Add their email in the contact details panel.
Send an invoice using a template with [Contact First Name]—and the greeting has no name.
The reason? That placeholder uses the separate Primary person → First name field, not the Contact name you just entered. The invoice’s contact panel doesn’t even show the Primary person fields.
To fix it, you have to leave the invoicing workflow, find the customer in Contacts, edit their record, and enter their name again. Even the full contact creation form requires this duplicate entry for an individual customer.
Suggested fix: “Primary person is the same as Contact name.”
Make this option available both on the full contact form and when creating or editing a contact within an invoice. For individual customers, it should populate the Primary person’s name from Contact name, with an opportunity to correct how the first and last names are split. Businesses should still be able to specify a separate primary person.
Creating a customer through an invoice should capture everything needed for a correctly personalized invoice email—without a trip to another screen.
Enter the name once. Use it in the email.
If you’ve had blank invoice email greetings, retyped customer names, or discovered these missing fields halfway through invoicing, please vote for this.
