Chart of Accounts - Click on the padlock icon of a locked account to redirect you to bank rules.
For Advisors only: if a padlock is present on an account of the COA I would like the padlock to go to the bank rules so they can easily be redirected to the new account. For example, we set up Directors Loan accounts for each financial year. Each year we hae to add a new account too the COAs and reroute all of the rules. Painful!
1 voteHey Michele, thanks for your suggestion to make the padlock icon on the Chart of Accounts a direct link to the associated bank rules.
We're grateful for your engagement and for letting us know the changes that would improve your workflow. We can see how this would be a huge time-saver for Advisors, especially when managing year-end processes like creating new Director's Loan accounts and rerouting the old rules.
We've reviewed your idea, and it's now ready to gain support from other community members. Along with votes, other Advisors can now comment to share more detail about how this feature could make their own account management processes much less painful. 🙂

Chart of accounts - Ability to set up credit card as a liability without a feed
Set credit card accounts as liabilities, not assets. We are not a bank, so credit cards are properly liabilities. There should be no reason these accounts should be reported as assets in any circumstance.
I can't set Account Type for bank accounts unless there is a feed associated with it. Even though, I'm not sure what good that actually does, and we don't have feeds for all our accounts. "Credit Card" is an available account type for bank accounts when they are feed-enabled, so adding credit cards as bank accounts appears to be what Xero intended, and that's what we…

Chart of Accounts - Change Xero's default Entertainment ledger codes
Chart of Accounts - the ledger codes (a) Entertainment-100% business and (b) Entertainment-0%. Can you change these categories? We accountants all know that the descriptions are misleading.
Almost all (unqualified) bookkeepers use (a) for client entertainment and claim VAT. Subsequently, accountants blindly treat this category as business expenses, reducing the taxable profit. (i.e. wrongly deduct it for corporation tax purposes) I cannot tell you how many cases I've seen in the past few years.
Please change the default categories to (a) Staff-only entertainment and (b) Client entertainment?
2 votesHi Ray, appreciate your raising this through product ideas.
We'll get a sense of the interest in changing this within the default chart of accounts from the community here.
Just to confirm, while Xero offers a default chart of accounts, you can import your own chart of accounts to set these up as you prefer, or edit individual accounts within Xero.

Lock dates - Allocate past years overpayments to invoices outstanding after accounts are closed
Hi, Please can we have the ability to allocate past years overpayments to invoices outstanding after the accounts are closed. These accounts do not form part of the main ledgers, being personal accounts, therefore the allocations should be made possible, as they were in Microsoft MOA. This would tidy up much of the personal accounts for customers and suppliers.
I look forward to a favourable response.Supplier Accounts - Also, are you looking at being made available, statement histories for the suppliers as asked for several years ago and Xero said they were working on it? This is very much…
1 voteHi Iris, it sounds like you're using Lock dates here and would like to allocate credit from an overpayment that was created in a locked period to an invoice after the lock date.
Atm, if you'd like to allocate credit you could either remove the lock date to do this, or apply a refund to the original overpayment and recreate and apply the overpayment for a date post the lock date. We'll continue to track the interest of this here, however want to be open that we don't have plans to change the behaviour of lock dates currently.

Chart of accounts - Import with GIFI codes
It would be nice when you import a custom chart of accounts to prepopulate the GIFI, similar to the report codes.

Chart of Accounts - Duplicate existing account
Being new to the business, new to finance and bookkeeping and even newer to Xero we are starting from scratch with our "Chart of Accounts". As we grow and want to create sub accounts for clearer reporting - having to manually 'add account' each time, and reselecting all the appropriate account settings is very time consuming, especially for a novice like me. Being able to right click and choose to duplicate an existing account and then be prompted to rename/renumber it would be so much quicker.
My work around is currently to open up the existing account - take a…

Chart of Accounts - Add visualisation when adding new account
It would be helpful when setting up new GL accounts in the COA if the screen would populate somewhere (even a drop down would be helpful) with the existing COA so you can see in same screen what’s already there and where your new account would fit logically

Chart of accounts - Option to exclude account from cash basis reports
Choose your cash basis accounts - After coming to the forum becuase I haven't found a way to remove non-cash accounts from cash basis reports I saw a bunch of people asking for depreciation to be ADDED to the reports. So obviously we all want something different. How about each account on the COA has another checkbox (like the "show on dashboard", "enable payments" check boxes) that gives the user the option to EXCLUDE FROM CASH basis REPORTS. I can remove all the deferred revenue, someone else can add in depreciation, and we can all have the cash basis reports…

Chart of accounts | Print - Include descriptions
Can Xero please bring back the function enabling the details to be printed with the Chart of Accounts. It was a feature when we converted to Xero, but is no longer.

Journals - Ability to access the journal entry from each transaction
I would love the ability to view the Journal entry created by each transaction, from the transaction itself (without having to leave the transaction to pull a journal report). QBO has this option and I find it very useful.

Lock dates - Flexibility in setting period and accounts applied to
we have specific cut offs for certain aspects of our EOM so more options for locking periods in certain categories would be so beneficial.
lock revenue for a specific period once reviewed
lock a payroll period once closed for EOM
lock expenses or AP once closed9 votes -
On focus the code dropdown should clear
In the dcoding screen, if there's already a code selected then the user has to manually empty the existing code to be able to type another. This is just clunky - when the dropdown is enabled it should either clear the field or allow the user to start typing a new code.
2 votesSorry for the delayed follow up here, Kevin. When you mention the dcoding screen would this be find & recode or somewhere a bit different in Xero?

Allow journals to Accounts Payable/Receivable
Unlock Accts Receivable and Accts Payable GL accounts. Currently unable to enter AJEs that require it. Even our auditors are asking why we cannot do this in Xero as with other accounting systems. Previously Xero responded by saying it's an account integrity issue...but accounting is an integrity issue! Too many hours wasted trying to work around this (and please don't suggest creating another account, as in Accts Rec 2)

Bank Accounts - Set up loan schedule and amortization
I think we should be able to create with a loan schedule with interest rates, term and amortization instead of having to manually enter the transaction.
47 votesHi everyone, while we appreciate your interest in a direct feature in Xero to schedule and manage loans this isn't something we have planned right now.
We do have some information on Xero Central that may help some here with managing loans in Xero.
We will continue to monitor the community support for this in the forums here, and share if there are any updates.

Lock dates for time entries in xero projects
We're currently using xero projects a lot and something that happens fairly regularly is staff posting time entries into finalised periods. I.e. we have run reports and finalised an accounting period and then there have been later changes in those periods in xero projects. It would be good to be able to lock periods in xero projects as we do with financial informtation in xero.

Lock dates - Ability to add password protection
Dear Xero product team,
Please could we have an option to Password protect Lock Dates.
Where certain user can only unlok Lock dates i.e. Accountants or Subscriber
At the moment anyone can unlock the Lock dates which defeats the purpose of the Lock Dates.
158 votesThank you for your engagement and feedback on this idea. We’ve seen some great suggestions in this thread on how a password-protected lock date could work. The current lock date feature prevents new transactions from being entered and can only be removed by Advisor level users, but we recognise that some users would benefit from introducing password protection.
As part of our new Xero Product Idea process, we have recently reviewed the idea and shifted this to “Accepted”. This reflects that this is an idea we’d like to develop, but that this isn’t currently on the roadmap. We'll be back with another update as soon as we have more to share.

Dashboard - Add a Monthly Average column to the Account Watchlist
having a monthly average additional column option in the account watchlist would be ideal and I would have thought a default setting that most people would want on their account watchlists...

Chart of Accounts - Ability to assign Foreign Currency to an account
I would like to be able to have a foreign currency account in the COA other than bank accounts. If an invoice is received and paid in a foreign currency, it should show as the foreign currency as the source, not the base currency. This affects loan accounts a lot and if invoices are paid from a loan account, instead of a bank account, you can't keep the currency consistent.

Chart of Accounts - Multiple Accounts Receivable and Payable
It would be very useful to be able to separate Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable to classify the contacts between external and internal (intercompany/group). This would assist with the consolidated views for a group of entities.

Chart of accounts - Add support for subaccounts
Xero should have the ability (similar to QuickBooks) to have sub accounts in Chart of Accounts.
84 votesHi community, thanks for continuing to engage, and sharing your needs in adding more layers to your chart of accounts structure.
We know especially for some of our US customers that this can sometimes be a show stopper in using of Xero.
Right now, we do have a product team that have begun exploring the efforts that'd be required to implement a change of this nature - while we can't commit to any development at this point we'll share any progression with you all here. Thanks
