Im guessing this is a legacy issue from back before we had a contact field for a given transaction, but it really needs to be fixed for proper revenue recognition. Right now I need to manually type in a customer in the description field, get rid of any narration that would appear there, then manually add it to the contact field for every instance of rev rec by customer in a report outside of xero. This will not work for any saas company of any scale.

This is extremely critical for us as a business - We cannot use some of our reports without it as it does not accurately reflect our sales by customer totals.

This is super critical for us! It will reduce the time required to make manual adjustments to the reports which can be hours if you're looking at 12 month's worth of data.

Critical feature to have for valuable analysis!
Especially when limited to only 2 tracking categories - this is a MUST

We use Mosaic for FP&A and in order to get vendor level data on expenses, we need contact/supplier/vendor name field in the journal entry to sync. When you are posting transactions to expense codes via a cash account, the vendor field syncs so you are left with only partial vendor level data. This is particularly critical when you have a lot of prepaids and accruals that you are posting the related expense via manual journal entries.

This is very important.
It would help when importing payroll from 3rd party processors which is currently a huge pain in Xero.QuickBooks has this feature. I can't believe we have to ask for it here.

Finance Nova Prospect commented
essential feature. please include.

Absolutely essential and seems like an easy ask. The workaround I'm trying is to use the tracking categories as Vendor name so when I download in excel I can consolidate Contact Name and my custom Vendor Name category into one. Shouldn't have to do that though, so please can you add the field to the line level detail of JE's? It is the holiday season ya know.

Super important when doing a vendor reconciliation as there are instances in which we are unable to book an invoice so we've done a accrual for it instead.

Not just:
"Essential feature for accountants who work with non-profits and want to be able to track grant and fund balances."
but essential in any project based situation
