Profit & Loss - Filter Tracking Report by second tracking category
Filter Compare Tracking Report by second tracking category - run the compare P&L report with the P&L down the left and the categories across the columns but then be able to filter the transactions within this report by the second tracking category.
Hot anticipation for this idea - We're pleased to share that this change is going live! (If you don't quite have it yet it'll be with you in the next 2 days)
If you use Tracking in your org we've added a new 'Compare tracking categories' option on the front page of the newer Profit & Loss.
While the older version had a limitation of selecting 100 options at a time, the team have doubled this, so now you can select up to 200 tracking categories to view at once.
In terms of activity
- Archived tracking options won't be shown by default but there is a switch to view and select these if you choose.
- When run, the report is designed to only show columns for tracking options that have had activity within the date range the reports run which should help you zone-in, and get a better view of what actions occurred!
Thanks again for all your feedback keeping us on the ball of how we can continue to make iterative change in the best interest of our customers. 🙂

Operating costs and building materials have a second category but I need one on timesheets to allocate the job and stage of project for numerous projects in a week.

I am updating my previous comment as it is critical that Xero does not lose functionality when they upgrade. I have just created all my financial reports in the new format and it was time consuming.

This is important functionality

This is absolutely business critical for one of my clients, as others have listed. The old format performs this function very well, and we will be in severe trouble if this is removed in July 2023 without any equivalent in the new report format. Please ensure we are not losing functionality when we lose these old formats.

My monthly P &L reports need all category by divisions (8) and brands (8) which the old version can do it.
The new version cannot do it and I need to refresh 64 times and write down the figure manual...........
Pls upgrade your new version before removing your old version.
Thanks

I am a partner of Xero. Currently, we have many clients who are used to the old versions Profit and Loss report format.
They need to generate a P&L report showing all category options of the 1st tracking category and yet able to filter by category option of the 2nd tracking category. If the new version will not have this function, then please at least retain the old version reports.
it seems like we are losing current functions at the sales module too.

Agreed, this is basic functionality and shouldn't be an extra app. We already have several apps for monthly reporting but we need this report filtering in Xero on live data for financial control purposes.
If you're reading this and relate, please rate this thread as critical and post a comment so we can get traction from Xero to develop a fix or leaving the old report at least.
It'd be a shame if this matter was overlooked and results in a mass exodus to another G/L ...

Thanks for the link, we cannot afford to pay for extra reporting.
If Xero are going to take away a reporting functionality we will have to change accounting packages. -

Agreed, strong push from me for P&L Reporting per two tracking categories, as available by selecting 'all xyz' under filter by tracking category. Our monthly reporting relies solely on this information and thus will request original format remains available until this is available in newer version!

Agreed. It seems like it'd be relatively basic coding for Xero developers to enable multiple variable reporting and unlock the value in having two tracking categories.
Would be good for Xero to develop this in the new P&L. As others have mentioned, it looks like we're instead losing tracking category functionality with the new format so it doesn't feel like an upgrade ...

I agree with Nathan. If there are two tracking categories available for data entry, then a reasonable person would assume that the second tracking category would be available for use in all the same reports that the first tracking category is available.

When designing our chart of accounts and tracking categories for Xero, the method of design assumed that if two tracking categories were available, there would be two tracking category report functionality.
Since this functionality does not appear to currently exist, I must make individual reports for each Location (tracking Category 1) when trying to examine a geographically spread out department (tracking Category 2).The data to achieve this is in our system, we just need reporting functionality which allows me to compare one tracking category over multiple tracking categories as separate entities.

Anyone in a nonprofit using Xero for tracking funders needs this option. We need to see expenses by program AND by funder, so we need to be able to analyze with 2 tracking codes.

Absolutely critical that this functionality is added, asap. The original profit and loss report let’s you do this already. The new version is a step backwards in this area

Yes! I want to be able to run a P&L and click 'compare 2nd tracking category' like I could in the old P&L format, without having to create a report and manually add a column for each value of the 2nd tracking category.

We would like to be able to filter reports by one tracking category, especially P&L and then in the Edit Format be able to add columns for the other tracking category, based on the filter. Edit Format loses any filter from the first part of customising the report. So, I add my comments to those already added and agree that this is a requirement - as two tracking categories are available a way to report in one column for both tracking categories needs to be possible.

I have raised this as a requirement before. It is critical that an individual tracking category can be analysed by its second tracking category. I have to run lots of individual reports to get this information

Hi Belinda, using the layout editor you should be able to add separate columns for each tracking category, and select the options for each.
As part of adding the columns you'll be able to select the comparative period the tracking is for. -
Belinda Coombs commented
I want the ability to add one column that looks at two tracking codes.
One Column =(( Type = Catering) +( Area = Cafe))
In edit Profit & Loss reporting (see attached) there is only one option, Type or Area.
Therefore even though there are two tracking codes, one can only report on one.
