Retain an option for existing homepage layout. The new card based layout brings no value and detracts from the primary function of the page.
Listen to feedback. The new card/widget based homepage is a long way from being ready to deploy as a mandatory home page. Before making it mandatory create a template layout of controls that matches the existing, then users can tweak from there. At the moment it's a really bad UX that diminishes value rather than adding any. This is a bookkeeping platform and it's straying from key requirements.
