UK Tax - Set up alerts/notifications for tax returns
Ability to have alert when action is required for a tax return
Purpose: being able to react and action items quickly when needed. Prompted rather than manual checking.
Thanks so much for sharing this idea 🙂
From your suggestion, it sounds like the improvement you'd like is notifications within a tax return to prompt customers to enter missing figures or other missing information before submitting.
Your idea is now live on Xero Product Ideas, so if you'd like to, you can share it with others who may also find this useful. They can add their vote and leave comments, which helps us better understand the level of interest and impact.
We’ll keep an eye on the feedback here and share any updates on the idea status as they happen.

It would be good to have a message pop up on the tax return if the winter fuel payment is not entered for income over £35,000. This now has to be entered on the 2025/2026 return.

The visual prompt that a VAT return has not been submitted should be very clear on the Home Page/Dashboard for Xero. It is easy to think that you have submitted your return when you haven't because the language "return is due in" can be misinterpreted as when the payment is going to be taken rather than when the return is to be submitted. When the return is overdue it is shown in RED however by this point (in the UK at least) the damage is done as penalties kick in.
It would be better if the VAT section on the Homepage/Dashboard changed colour (e.g., Amber) to draw your attention that the VAT return has not been submitted with say 5 days to go.
For small businesses/sole traders, this would avoid an unnecessary penalty from HMRC.

Would like a red prompt on main dashbord screen if VAT return is finalised but not filed . Do not want to go into VAT return screen to be prompted. Small businesses like mine may not visit "VAT" from one quarter to the next if you think you are done.
By showing on the main dashboard screen you would instantly see something was wrong avoiding a late filing and unnecessary HMRC penalties or fines.
