Projects - Assign a Purchase Order to a Project
Ability to assign purchase orders to a project in Xero.
Purpose: To make Xero projects overview shows everything ordered/billed & invoiced to the customers.

Hi community, some time passed since our last update in the thread here we do want to return and share - while our product teams explored possibilities for how we might represent Purchase Orders in Projects research has confirmed that there is underlying work needed to the platform Purchase Orders are built on before we can achieve any good outcomes of your needs here.
We have enthusiasm and a close eye remaining on the support for this, but want to be honest that this is not something that we’ll be able to focus our attentions on in the near future.
Once we have completed work first needed in the Purchase Orders space we can reassess how to integrate purchase Orders into Projects and will update you all of steps forward, here.

Xero would be the clear winner if they would finish the projects module.
QBO is terrible in my opinion and why I switched to Xero, I just didn't realize projects was half baked in.
PO's not being able to be attached.
Project Address's not possible.
API has no ability to assign a quote to a project, and once you manually attach the quote when you go to convert the quote to an invoice you have to manually assign the project again.
They add 4-5 features and they would seriously get lot's of positive feedback and new users. These aren't small little things, these are basic and mandatory that most just assume would be standard.
I really don't see much benefit of using projects if you don't have multiple projects for one customer. Yet if you do it's not really useful because of the limitations.
Hope they are trully modernizing the back end to be able to deploy features in the future but I'm afraid that might be smoke and mirrors and they are running the wheels of out dated technology.

Can someone confirm if quickbooks has this feature ? Sage has this but I dont want to move back to that platform.

I feel Quickbooks v xero is about 'net gain' since they have different features deployed to varying degrees of success.
Like the PO's to Projects QBO does have BUT there is no facility in QBO to be able to pay suppliers or generate pay file since there is nowhere to hold bank account details of suppliers!
There is no fixed asset management in QBO and exporting reports to excel is poor because it has inherent formatting (like sage).
QBO is much more user friendly though to the smaller business. Just make sure you do research on your needs before migrating from one to the other!

Most definitely Quickbooks have the ability. They have many things we keep on asking for here. I am seriously considering moving. They have their projects as a sub to the customer.

There's about 6-8 must have features that have been requested for 5 plus years. These aren't "would be nice if" features but mandatory.
IT'S INSANE!
They kept trying to push me to Workflow Max which is 100 times more than I need. Hopefully since they sold it, they will focus on projects.
Not holding my breath though, I tell everyone if Xero can't do what you need, it never will be able to. No faith anything will get added.
I have been using the product for 16 months and have not seen anything new function wise. Just pretty reports.

Weve been waiting for SIX YEARS for this ...
In 2017 I still had an iphone5 .... Im about to get the i15 in September
Meanwhile XERO users cant assign a PO to a Project ...
We are being fobbed off with this "logical" request with automated responses - with no end in sight for this ...
although other software packages offers this - somehow XERO have made this seem impossible / too difficult and they show no interest to offer this .... dont feel like they care about their users

Needed to show cost commitments for projects, and since bills are allocated to projects, and bills flow through from purchase orders, then purchase orders should be allocated to projects.

Agree with Jame. You only have to look at the posting dates... idea opened in 2017. Feedback received in May 2022 and still waiting.
XERO is only smoke and Mirrors.

I think it's time to look for a better system. If they don't apply updates that we all request after having a few years to work on it, then it's time to move on. Don't hold your breath guys. Please let us all know if you find a better alternative.

I have been using projects for 16 months. The only thing that I have seen changed or added is the timer to desktop. Don't hold your breath here.

PO’s must be able to link to a project.

Good day
We have converted a client from Jobsys to Xero. We feel there are a lot of things lacking in projects:
1) Sufficient linking of documents in the sales/purchases pipeline ie carrying over of numbers and then
2) Auto-numbering of projects would be so so so helpful
3) Drill downs esp with expenses being added
4) Document linkage to projects is crucial
5) Additional fields on invoices indicating project numbersThanks

Now that you guys are retiring WorflowMax, which was the go-to suggested workaround, this has become a must. I don't see how it can reasonably be put off any longer.

A way to filter or search through all the POs on Xero by project would be incredibly helpful. We assign a project when creating line items in the PO and thought you must be able to use this to create a tracking summary report for a specific projects to find all their associated POs. It turns out this isn't the case. I wanted to use a report such as this to track my total spend. At the moment you can only generate tracking summary reports for invoices, which helps me show what has been spent but not future spend and therefore doesn't give me the full picture.

No a bad idea Thomas, but we don't want everyone with access to projects to see the PO. That is why if we could attach it in a way where only admin and managers can see it is no good.

We thought this was a critical function for us until we had a customer who issued us multiple POs for a project. We add each PO as Tasks to our projects (see attached). This way we can invoice across multiple POs on a single invoice and the customer can accurate apply the invoice task lines to the appropriate PO. This also lets us track our status for POs from within the Project app. We use this practice whether our customers issue a single PO or multiple POs per project.

These requests for functionality are a red herring.
I have added my support to numerous ‘critical’ gaps in the softwareFrom my research there are no plans to make any changes to the package
I am seeing requests for functionality from 10 years ago and no response and no updates from XERO
