UK Payroll - Ability to process prior year employment allowance claims through Xero payroll
At the moment this isn't an available feature, and HMRCs basic PAYE tools need to be used. It would be good to see this as an option in Xero.

Hi Emily, Not exactly- Xero assist logged into my account and found they could tick the button, but then when I logged in, I found it was un-ticked. When I realised Xero assist were using Macs (I'm on Windows 11), my son suggested using a different browser instead of Chrome. I tried Edge and then the box stayed ticked and all was well. All I know is that it is a chrome compatibility issue. I'm still waiting for HMRC to update my Employment Allowance though for 23/24- it still says I'm not claiming it! Hopefully when the EPS is sent it will register.

Hi Cath, Did you find out what the problem was?

Cath Oram commented
I had the same problem Emily, and a lot of time was wasted trying to find out what the problem was.

This feature would be extremely helpful, I am also experiencing a problem where the box won't tick on the Chrome browser, but it does work on other ones.

Please can this functionality be added to enable better payroll records to be kept

This is a common problem, and is easily fixed in other software providers.

Since Xero unset the allowance setting itself without it being noticed, it should provide a means of claiming for a prior year.

Yes please this would be really helpful.

I registered a client for PAYE and whilst awaiting the PAYE reference numbers set up and processed payroll just as I would normally do. The RTI filings obviously were rejected. However I would have expected to have gone on and resubmit these filings once the PAYE reference numbers were received. Unfortunately HMRC are taking longer to provide the numbers, and when I did get them, I discovered that the 2 months' payrolls that were processed on Xero Payroll will now need to be done on Basic Tools. Really, Xero? At times I do wonder why I just don't use Basic Tools rather than Xero Payroll as 'do it on Basic Tools' seems to be the stock answer these days from Xero.
I remember back in the early days of Xero Payroll I summed up the payroll offering as Basic Tools with a payslip. I think Basic Tools is now more advanced that Xero Payroll!

The inability to re-submit an EPS is frustrating after any tax month is frustrating - Xero's answer is to use HMRC Basic tools but we are paying for Xero Payroll.
We use other payroll software that has this facility why doesn't Xero?

I moved from sage payroll to xero payroll with a previous client and it was as simple as ticking a box on sage, and my client got £4000. I've just failed to log into HMRC basic PAYE tools, so it's feeling especially frustrating.

How do you claim through Basic PAYE Tools. I'm clueless how to do it as have always relied on Payroll software to sort everything out

I think being able to apply for past Employment Allowance years.... having to request from HMRC direct seems very clunky!

It's annoying when you have payroll software, that for somethings you still have to revert back to the HMRC basic tools software to impliment. There have been a few things now that I have found Xero can't perform certain tasks, which defeats the whole point of paying for a payroll package.

Can't believe this is not a feature within Xero - absolutely a must.
Please add this as a standard feature because if we revert to use HMRCs Basic PAYE tool for prior year EA claims, it kind of defeats the object of having Xero payroll.
I will simply go back to Moneysoft for a more simplistic and reliable process of payroll runs
