The new drag-fill function is useful and appreciated, but it is not what the original request asked for.
The requested feature is spreadsheet-style pasting of multiple rows and columns from Excel, Google Sheets or Airtable directly into Xero invoice lines.
Currently, clicking a cell immediately enters editing mode. Pasting therefore inserts everything as text inside one field instead of treating the clipboard content as separate cells.
Xero needs a way to select a starting cell without editing it, such as Ctrl+click, clicking the cell border or another selection method.
As a first step, pasting should:
Interpret tabs as columns and line breaks as rows.
Populate multiple rows and columns from the selected cell.
Create additional invoice lines automatically.
As a later enhancement, Xero could:
Validate fields such as Item, Account, Tax Rate and Tracking.
Highlight invalid or unmatched controlled fields without rejecting the entire pasted block.
If validation is more complex to implement, Xero could initially enable multi-cell pasting only for standard text and numeric fields such as Description, Quantity, Unit Price and Discount, then add support for controlled fields later.
This alone would solve a large part of the original problem and provide a practical first version.
This is different from drag-fill, which only repeats one value down a column. CSV import is also not equivalent, since it requires preparing and uploading a separate file.

Appreciate you sharing this idea, Nic. The key request here is to support multi-cell clipboard pasting in the invoice line-item grid. Copying several cells from a spreadsheet could then populate multiple invoice rows and columns in one action.
This could make entering large invoices much quicker, particularly when the information has already been prepared in spreadsheet.
