Organisation settings - Change base currency
It is remarkably convoluted to change the base currency even when no transactions have been posted. It only seems to be possible by cancelling the subscription and starting again. I rely on clients purchasing the software and it is not unknown for them to enter an incorrect base currency. I have used other systems where changing the base currency is very quick and easy. I suggest you make this a little easier.

I understand that if an organization is registered and pays taxes in the UK, defaulting the base currency to GBP makes sense from a system-design standpoint. However, not allowing an override removes essential flexibility for companies whose functional or presentation currency differs from their tax jurisdiction.
In practice, there are often more relevant factors than tax location in determining an entity’s base currency, especially for holding companies, multinationals, and groups requiring consolidation across subsidiaries.
I’m currently transferring a UK-registered holding company to Xero whose financials are in EUR. To migrate its balances cleanly without artificial FX differences, I’ve had to use an uncertain workaround: selecting an EU country during setup just to enable EUR as the base currency, then manually correcting all other details back to the UK. That’s not ideal, and it risks unintended side effects.
It would be far more robust if Xero allowed users to override the default currency at setup (with an appropriate warning) so that the software can accommodate legitimate, internationally compliant structures without forcing users into inaccurate configurations or unsupported workarounds.

I have the same problem - no transactions and when loading the first bill it comes up in NZD with no GST. I have tried multiple ways to try and change this and failed. It is very frustrating.

When you have a company that needs this, you REALLY need it. The work arounds are horrific.
I conpeltet understand that the refactoring of the code might be a big job for not that many, the impact to those companies would be huge.

I am having the same scenario. I need to change my base currency before I can go live. Has the issue been sorted out now by Team Xero?

As an advisor and Xero Partner, I would like to raise awareness of a significant limitation within Xero’s platform regarding changes in functional currency.
Currently, if a company changes its functional currency, Xero requires users to create a new organisation with the new base currency. This presents serious challenges for advisors and clients, especially when trying to maintain continuity in financial records.
This inflexibility may hinder the ability to onboard clients who require this functionality, as it can be a difficult proposition to migrate all data to a new organisation.
I am bringing this to the attention of the broader Xero community and the Product Team to emphasise the importance of implementing base currency modification functionality, and I strongly urge the Xero Product Team to consider enabling the option to amend the base currency within an organisation, to accommodate such scenarios and improve long-term usability of the platform.
Let’s vote and support this improvement to make Xero more adaptive and user-friendly for global businesses.

Can Xero do something about Changing the base currency, this is crucial for small entities operating in countries where currency is uncertain and businesses may need to change base currency from one business to the other.

I have the same issue, UK company which has elected to have EURO as its reporting currency. It would be good to have this facility. Other wise we are having to use a workaround.

This is very important functionality for European companies with a UK subsidiary where they prefer to have a Euro functional currency. We see this quite often. Xero, please make a plan.

i have the same problem as Jonathan. The base currency needs to be USD otherwise the P&L, balance sheet, etc, has incorrect fx differences reported (with a GBP base currency and running any report in USD). We also have a USD budget, etc.
Jonathan did you find a solution for this, or an alternative provider? Xero is great for the bank linkage but the reports are too inaccurate for a USD financational and presentation currency and I feel like using excel will give a better result :/

We have a UK based client who have a presentational and functional currency in USD. There is no possibility of setting up this company correctly on Xero, as Xero only lets UK organisations use the base currency on GBP to link easily to taxonomy.
It would be very helpful if this could be set up.
