Xero Tax (UK) | Company - Liquidation & Cessation Accounts and CT Returns

Please add the functionality to set a cessation of trade date for a company in liquidation or in the insolvency process to allow for accounts and corporation tax returns to be produced from the last year end to the date of cessation of trade/insolvency.

This will enable Accountants to produce these closing accounts and CT returns from HMRC and so offer a one stop shop and earn more revenue.

Hi team, thanks for your feedback here. We recognise how important this capability is for practices managing company closures, and appreciate everyone who's explained the impact of not being able to prepare and file final accounts and Company Tax returns directly from Xero Tax.

While work isn't underway just yet this is on our team's roadmap. We’ll share further updates as this gets picked up.

    Xero Tax cannot manage company cessation accounting - it insists on Companies House dates being the same as the organisation dates, which have been shortened (according to their instructions) to cope with a cessation year - so we cannot prepare accounts unless we go to Companies House and change the ARD!

    There is no requirement to file cessation accounts with Companies House, in fact they will be rejected as with other software they would obviously have the incorrect dates.

    So Xero Tax is imposing an internal block for security purposes during normal filing, that prevents cessation accounts being prepared for the client, even though those accounts are not going to be filed with Companies House.

    Xero Tax needs to know if this is a cessation period and adjust its internal checks accordingly.

    This should be a basic feature. How is an accountants practice expected to operate professionally when we can't offer filing of cessation accounts and tax? There isn't an option to file with HMRC outside of a software so why would Xero not support this?

    Without this function we can't claim cessation losses, we have to resort to snail mail to ask HMRC to apply these for us, which as we know will take a lot of time to process. This function needs to be addressed after 2 years of asking, makes us as accountants look like were providing a poor service to our clients, all other software available has this function.

    It appears over 2 years later when the idea was initially submitted, it is still not possible to submit the final set of accounts and tax return to HMRC without changing the accounting period year end on Companies House.

    This is not a good alternative and given how expensive Xero is getting each year, this should be a feature made available.

    Somewhat ridiculous that the software cannot file cessation accounts and tax returns. Would suggest that this is implemented asap.

    Critical requirement with HMRC removing their direct link in March tax accountants will be obliged to find other software. I am sure Xero dont want that to happen

    I have a client that has requested that their business be closed down too, and I want to file the final accounts. Xero does not have this functionality. Very disappointing. I would request that this feature be added ASAP.

    This is critical, I cannot believe Xero does not have this functionality with businesses closing down all the time.

    I have a couple of clients that have requested that their business be closed down, and I want to file the final account, and I realise that Xero does not have this functionality. So disappointing. I would request that this feature be added ASAP.

    This will be critical after March 2026 when the ability to submit accounts on HMRC website direct is withdrawn.

    Given that you have to file CT returns online and Xero does this, it is imperative that final CT returns can be filed online

    Yes it is a vey basic functionality which is urgently needed
