  1. Can GST returns be under the tax tab (not sure where it is but it isn't there or under reports; currently under accounting tab/ reports).

Hi team, we really appreciate your feedback and getting to know the new navigation.

We want to confirm with the Tax menu in Xero's new navigation GST Return will be available, or the relevant Sales Tax report for your organisation's region (e.g Activity Statement in AU, VAT Return for UK).

As you can with favoriting reports, it'll also be possible to favourite and show this report from the Reporting menu if you choose.

  2. Xero doesn't have a built-in option to directly integrate with or automatically use Gmail for sending W-9 requests. That would be really helpful ~

It sounds like you're referring to the Request W-9 window, Reuben? You should be able to set up Gmail as your default email app on the device you're using. If this isn't opening Gmail by default you may want to check your device's settings.

  3. I appreciate getting a notification of a future ATO outage but I'd like the ability to dismiss it; I've already checked the dates and confirmed it won't affect me, but it stays on the page while completing the BAS.

Thanks for your feedback on this notification banner, Shannon.

After a quick check in with our team on this, I'm pleased to share they've made a small change so you'll now find it's able to be dismissed!

  4. I would like to request the return of the nice simple professional looking GST Returns and Printouts as the new layout is unsuitable to be sent to Clients and printing out the GST Returns and details now appears spread over more pages.

Thanks for your feedback here, everyone. We appreciate hearing what our customers need, and listening to feedback our team have made a change to the layout of the GST Transactions by tax rate view, so this is now similar to the previous report in a portrait layout 😊

  5. With the new basis period changes coming into effect, some clients may want to change their year-end from 30.09 to 31.03. Currently changing the year-end in Xero will cause previous opening balances to change and most likely mean any working papers produced in Xero will no longer match the accounts.

It would be a useful tool to have something whereby a previous accounting period end could be locked so a new year-end could be chosen without messing up the old year-end balances.

Hi team, I can now confirm we've now added the ability for you to create a short transition period (between 1 month and 12 months long) when changing the Financial Year End date within your organisations Financial Settings.

Just to recap for anyone new coming across the idea here - Aligning with the UK basis period reforms we've made a change to Financial settings so you can add start and end dates to different periods. This change impacts multiple areas of Xero.

    • Fixed assets will draw on this information, to prevent any loss of historic information when your year end changes. Everything will automatically be calculated for you based on the period start and end dates you set in Financial Settings.
    • The same story will apply in Reporting. All historic reports will be protected. And you’ll have accurate comparison periods even across varied financial years.
    • In Xero Tax, you’ll be…
  6. W9 link for contractors to enter information needs to be extended beyond 7 days. In addition it should be a generic link that can be sent to multiple people.

Thanks for your feedback, Robert. For security reasons, we're unable to make this a generic link, however I'm pleased to share that we've now extended the link expiry to 30 days 🙂

  7. Make W-9 request available from the contact page. Perhaps where financial details are manually entered. Why have to go over to the 1099 report?

Hi everyone, we've released a new 'Tax Details' section for US customers in Contacts that allows you to request W-9s from a contact you've set up in Xero. From this section you'll also be able to see a contacts W-9 status and manually update this if needed.

We've also added additional fields for 'Name on the income tax return' (previously 'Legal name') and 'Business or disregarded entity name' in Contacts to match the 1099 W-9 Management space.

Thanks for sharing and staying updated with us here through product ideas.😊

  8. When filling the GST to ATO through Xero and selecting to Lodge and save bill as draft, I can't find any billing information in the draft bill (nor approved bill) .I don't know where to pay this bill, I need the billing details which have not transferred with the bill.
I have to do this manually, save the pdf to desktop then attach to draft bill (do it the old way like 20 years ago)???
This should not be a new idea. It should be a minimum to have a draft bill with the related bill attachment.
    Can you do…

Hi there, when lodging directly through Xero, payment details are displayed at the top of the statement page once it's been lodged, including various payment options such as Bpay, credit card, and others.

Please note that these payment details are only available when you are connected to the ATO in Xero and lodging directly through the platform. This is because the payment details are provided directly by the ATO and are specific to your entity.

  9. Xero finally added Legal Name & Business Name fields so we can actually file 1099s properly for sole proprietors that have a different legal name than the contact name. This was a critical improvement But now we have to toggle between two different contact pages because there isn't full integration between the 1099 Contact page and the main Contact page. We want to set up vendors properly from the start, get a W9 on file before our client even pays a vendor ideally (and we're not always going to use your W9 link), and so when we get that W9,…

Hi team, we appreciate your feedback and sharing with us here. We've made some changes in this space and recently released a new 'Tax Details' section for US customers in Contacts.

This allows you to request W-9s from a contact you've set up in Xero, and you'll also be able to see a contacts W-9 status and manually update this if needed.

Additional fields have been added for 'Name on the income tax return' (this was previously 'Legal name') and 'Business or disregarded entity name' in Contacts to match the 1099 W-9 Management space.

  10. When I was paying just GST, I could file my tax return directly to the IRD from XERO. I am now paying GAP (GST and Provisional Tax) and no longer get the option to file my GST return directly from XERO - I can only file it manually, which is obviously much more time consuming. XERO, can you please make changes to your setup so that GAP payments can be filed with the NZ IRD straight from XERO. Thank you.

Hi everyone, we have just released a change for the 1099 reports. Now, PayPal, Stripe and Venmo transactions are auto-excluded from 1099 reports based on the description of the item in an Invoice or Bill. Or, the reference in an Invoice or Bill 😊

We appreciate your interest and sharing with us for the idea here. Thanks

  12. Add a quick option to create a manual journal entry to adjust the sales tax amount paid when reporting and filing sales taxes.

My state (and others, I assume) forces me to round up to the nearest dollar the amount of sales tax I owe when I file, which results in the filed number being different than what's in my "sales tax" account in Xero. I then have to add a manual journal entry to adjust that amount - usually debiting from one of my product categories.

It would be nice to have the option to do this automatically when…

Hi team, returning to confirm that we've now released an improvement so you can handle variances in the Sales tax amount payment and make sure this matches what is owed to the state. You'll find you can now record an adjustment when marking a State sales tax report complete. See more on this in Xero Central.

  13. GST Transactions - we have organizations that use mixed GST codes in accordance with IRD ruling. It appears the GST report no longer sub-totals per GST code (eg. we have 3.39% rate and 15% rate and a previously used rate 2.95%). It would be helpful for the reports to provide subtotals after a change in tax code use, to provide a further level for the user to check

  14. We've lost the ability to see if there are attachments on contacts - it used to be a quick way to see if a PDF W9 was on file. We also used to keep a 1099 file in Xero Files and would link those to the contacts, so we could quickly see if clients had been updated. That was especially helpful when names didn't correspond well (dba's and such). Now the files are hidden in the Files section of the Contacts but their aren't visible from the 1099 management.

  15. To be able to bulk change settings for customer or suppliers.. for example, all of our customers and suppliers (4000+) were added to Xero but have all been pre set to include 20% VAT when invoicing.

But not all of our services are VAT chargeable, now whenever we invoice the VAT rate is pre set, causing us to need to remember to remove it. We can individually change this per customer or supplier to use our organisations own setting, in which this pulls from our schedule of rates. But to have the ability to change this in bulk would make…

Hi Mabyn, sorry for not rounding back to your idea sooner. This should be possible through imports. To bulk update your contacts in Xero, you can export your current contacts list, make adjustments (in this case it sounds like you'll want to update the 'AccountsReceivableTaxCodeName'), then re-import your contacts list to Xero.

As long as you don't change your contact's name this will updated the details of that contact when imported to your organisation 🙂

  16. I would like an e-mail that could be sent directly from XERO requesting the the W9.

  17. There is a need to manually edit the amount of GST paid instead of using Xero's calculation. For example, for credit card merchant fees, merchants calculate GST based on individual transactions and sum up the total GST payable, add onto the merchant fees for the total amount payable. As Xero calculate GST based on the total amount, there is a difference in the GST payable. Other accounting systems allows you to adjust, and it will automatically adjust the total amount. Without this feature, we have to use either rounding (for below 0.10c) or add a new line item. The problem…

Hi 👋 Xero calculates the GST on each line item in invoices, bills and other transactions. The GST is then rounded to the nearest cent. The total GST is the sum of these amounts.

We don't offer alternative rounding methods but if you have the global or Singapore versions of Xero you can enter a tax adjustment if you want to.

    Simply,

    1. Select the Tax Exclusive option in the Amounts are field.
    2. Edit the amount shown in the Tax Amount box - if this box isn't showing, click the + symbol next to the Tax Rate heading

We have more information in our article here.

  18. It would be really helpful when in the Transactions by Tax Rate or Transactions by BAS Field tabs in the Activity Statement if you could collapse by the Tax Types. It is currently very cumbersome navigating these screens for businesses with high volumes of transactions. If you want to view the GST Free Expenses, you will have to scroll through hundreds of transactions and hope that you find the GST Free Expense heading in amongst all of them. The current work around is to export to Excel and manage the data that way, which isn't always ideal.

Hi Amy, I'm pleased to say that we've recently introduced this feature, making several improvements to the GST transactions report:

    • The 'Transactions by Tax Rate' and 'Transactions by BAS Field' tabs have been combined into a single view, now accessible through a 'By Tax Rate vs By BAS Field' filter.
    • Users can now filter transactions by specific BAS fields, tax rates, or both, a feature that is particularly beneficial for organisations with a large volume of transactions.
    • A wider view has been introduced for better visibility
    • We've also added a sticky top header for easier navigation.
  19. Can the GST Audit report print in order to match return , Ie sales at top, than expense and non GST last. rather than exporting and sorting . Usually less transactions and easier to check first. but have scroll through 100s to find.

Hi all, just confirming as per my recent update. Within the Transactions tab of the new GST Return, you can now choose to view by box number or tax rate, giving more customisation of how you review associated transactions.

  20. Xero should show at the top of the screen or show a notification if you have an activity statement to submit (otherwise you have to specifically go into "Activity Statement" under "Accounting" to check).

Hi June, we've made a recent improvement for Activity Statements to surface the payment due date for any lodged statements. You'll find this from the list of Activity statements within the Completed section, and when you open a Statement you'll see the payment dude date shown at the top of the statement along with payment options to help simplify the process. 😊
