Bank | Account transactions - Show Total of selected transactions
When manually reconciling a bank clearing account, you have to manually add up the credits that you have ticked to make sure that they add up to the debit that you are reconciling to.
It would be great if there was a figure showing the total of all items ticked.
It would work exactly the same as when preparing a batch payment in the Purchases module where the total of all bills ticked is shown at the top.
It would save SO MUCH time if we could have a similar total showing in the bank transactions screen - there can be a LOT of sales to match to a single merchant deposit - ticking them off then adding them up is incredibly inefficient.
Hi everyone, we appreciate this idea has built some support overtime.
While we'll continue tracking interest in this here, being upfront developing the Account Transactions tab of a bank account to add a tally for the selected transaction amount is not in our short term plans.
That said, JAX may help with some related tasks. For example, try asking: “What is the total of the credits in my 'x' account for the current financial year?” or "Give me a total of all bills paid between [date range]" - You can adapt this by using the relevant account and date range.
We’ll continue to monitor interest in this idea and appreciate you sharing your feedback.

@kelly Munro,
Jax will be totally useless here. The purpose of this is to allow for easier reconciling of control accounts (i.e. what does this selection of transactions total).
I'm really disappointed to hear that Xero will not be looking at this in the short term. Particularly since this was requested in June 2022!!
It really makes me wonder what the point of this ideas area is for if you just ignore them for years and then when it finally gets traction, you kick it down the road.

What a surprise! Looks like Xero's big announcement at its Bristol Roadshow that it was listening, and was going to focus on fixing practical issues for practitioners (Source: www.accountingweb.co.uk) wasn't worth the hot air they expended while making it.
Disappointing but not surprising, other that it took several days for the mask to slip, rather than the hours I expected. This is why I no longer recommend Xero to clients.

I think your suggestion completely misses the point of the recommendation. The recommendation is to enable the same functionality as is available with the same screen in sales and purchases.
Let's come back to why it is a good idea. Some finance platforms, stripe, bank, etc, settle weekly (that's the debit) whereas a connected POS system will post transactions, the credit daily or indeed each time the register closes - can be twice or three times a day depending on shift patterns.
To reconcile the account you need to total all the credits in week in order to match them to the debit. And as the settlement from the bank/stripe can come in a few days after the week in questions or include/exclude days if there are bank holidays. So, the only way to do this at present is with a calculator.
Xero is meant to make life easier, so wouldn't it be a good idea to have the same function as we have in Sales and Purchases, that we can click the checkbox and it totals the credits (or debits) in order that we can match them to the debit (or credit).
Can I suggest that you actually understand what the problem is before offering generic solutions.
Kind regards

Kelly, this is very easy to achieve, all you need to do, on the Account Transactions or other pages that allow you to checkbox one or more transactions is show (at the top where it says "X items selected") add a total for Spent Money and Receive Money.
I have even started the JS script for you, which simply needs to be embedded into the page, it doesnt save values, it doesnt need to interact with the data in anyway excepting what is shown on screen. See attached. -

I simply cannot believe that I had not noticed this exists, another stupid let down when all it would be would be javascript function that would add massively when selecting items in a control account for reconciliation to ensure that they match / totals are the same. Absolutely bloody NUTS that this does NOT exist!!! Hasten to say ... QBO has had it for YEARS!!!

Add a function which totals selected transactions in a bank or control account (i.e. you can see what the total of your selected transactions is before hitting reconcile)

Selecting multiple lines while reconciling manual bank accounts (ones without a feed) from the account transaction screen displays a total of the selected lines

Having the Account Transactions list total the selected lines would make things so much easier when trying to find which items relate to a certain amount during reconciliation or at other times when you need ot know the total of certain items on that page.

This would make manually reconciling a till account so much quicker. Due to delays in the card money hitting the bank, I can't always get it to come back to a running total

Very important when reconciling clearing accounts. With timing delays of payments the account doesn't always come back to a $0 running balance.

I agree with the other posters. It would be great if there was continuity across all screens where you already show the number of items selected but now need to add the TOTAL value of those selected items as well. Just like you already do for the AWAITING APPROVAL tab & AWAITING PAYMENTS tab. Please mirror this.
Currently we screen grab the data and paste into Excel to faff around a bit to get the total!
Thanks for merging the ideas into one.

PAID Transactions tab. Include the TOTAL of the ITEMS selected, not just the number of items.
ACCOUNT Transactions tab. Include the TOTAL of the ITEMS selected, not just the number of items.
The AWAITING APPROVAL tab & AWAITING PAYMENTS tab already show both correctly. Please mirror this.

It would be really handy to be able to see a 'sum' total of items selected, when checking transactions off in the account transactions screen, like you can when you highlight a selection of numbers on a spreadsheet. It would be great if it added a total as you select each one, the same way it does when you are selecting items to pay in the bills / awaiting payment screen.

I've been wishing Xero could do this ever since we started using it. Fabulous idea.

THE ISSUE
We use bank accounts to reconcile settlements by merchant account providers and transactions automatically posted by our EPOS (card and cash = 2 reconciliation accounts). When in a reconciliation account the credit (transferred from the bank account into which the settlement is paid) will be the sum of several debits (transactions from the EPOS); i.e. there is a one to many relationship. We match them off manually then "Mark as reconciled".THE SUGGESTION
This task would be easier if when selecting the tick box (in the Bank Statement screen) a total was visible in order that we can see that the value of transactions selected total 0.
