Hi everyone, we want to thank you all for your meaningful feedback and detail of the uses you each have for enabling duplicate names for contacts.
Right now, the contact name field is the key identifier that interacts with many other Xero features, and as such, changing how this field functions is not a small feat.
As noted by others in the comments, some users have found adding unique characters or using the account number in the contact name useful.
At this time we don’t have plans for developing the ability to have duplicate names of a contact in Xero. However, the work happening around core features might open the door for improvements like this down the line.
For now, we'll keep a close watch on the support this idea continues to build, and we’ll make sure to share updates if anything changes.

Hi everyone, we know this remains a highly important request, and we appreciate the volume of detail you’ve shared around billing, delivery and contact management workflows in this idea.
As shared in our last update - our team has been progressing the next phase of work needed to bring this more meaningfully into invoicing.
We know many of you are looking for clearer timing, and while I’m not able to confirm a release date at this stage, I do want to reassure you this remains an active area of work for our product teams.
We’ll continue to return here with further updates as we move through the next stages. Thanks again for your patience and for continuing to share the workflows that make this so important.

Ben Smith, I see from your post that you have multiples of the same contact but with different addresses. We've been struggling for YEARS with Xero's inability to allow multiple contacts with the same name. I may have misunderstood your post but please could you tell me how you've managed to get multiples of the same contact within Xero? Have I missed something or are you having to do what we do with a clumsy, highly frustrating workaround? As a fellow Xero user who's also had enough of ill-conceived "improvements" introduced whilst Xero fails to resolve issues that impact heavily on day to day functionality, I'd really appreciate knowing.

We have been waiting for this function ever since we started using Xero. Initially we saw promises from Xero and corresponding frustration in comments from other users who had been waiting for even longer but took these with a pinch of salt. After all, a highly important function such as this might need some time to implement because of its impact on other areas of the software. However, having seen and experienced a huge raft of other changes and improvements that have negatively impacted on the user friendly experience that Xero once was, and which are now causing real hassle and taking up more time than is necessary, whilst this issue has still not been addressed, we've sadly come to the conclusion that this issue will never be addressed in our lifetime. An update on this from Xero would be greatly appreciated.

Hi team, we have some updates to share. Before we dive into the details, we want to be clear that while we’re committed to monitoring, learning, and refining the Homepage, we don’t intend to return to the previous Dashboard style or its column-based widget layout.
A few months back, we rolled out several enhancements to the "Edit homepage" capability to give you better control over your layout, including:
- Widgets that remain stationary until they are dropped into a new placement
- A "shadow" preview showing exactly where a widget will be placed during drag-and-drop
- Refined animations for a much smoother visual experience
- Improved on-page guidance regarding how to save multiple layouts across different screen sizes
In addition to the existing size options for Chart of Accounts and Cash In and Out, our team is currently building smaller widget sizes for Invoices Owed to You, Bills to Pay, Chart of Account, Cash…

Sorted! Deleted all the widgets from the Homepage! A real shame but going the "long way round" is now the simplest, cleanest route.

Just a thought: Xero has different subscription options which give access to different functions according to the subscription rate. Would it be possible to offer "different" screens linked to the subscription too? That way, small and micro businesses could have a more functional, less overwhelming, summary homepage whilst larger organisations could have the all singing, all dancing one that contains more information than a micro business or simple self-employed person needs?
Adam Willemse suggests that part of the issue is people who don't want to "treat themselves to screen real estate" or are working for stingy companies. If only that was the case.

The new Homepage is cluttered and overwhelming. My husband took one look and blanked out! I had to sit with his Homepage and delete EVERY box except for the Sales Invoices one. So now his "overview" of his own company has taken a complete backseat in contrast to the old Homepage where he had the information on his Homepage even if he chose not to look at it. He absolutely hates it, and I have to agree with him, it's appalling, overly cluttered, overwhelming and obscures the essential day to day elements you actually need to use.

Hi everyone, it makes a lot of sense to want a cleaner way to organise dashboard widgets. When related items like bank accounts or invoice summaries are grouped together, it’s easier to find what you need without much scrolling..
For now, you can use the Edit dashboard button at the bottom of the page to reorder widgets—move your most-used ones to the top and hide the rest.
This idea is now Gaining Support, so we can see how many others would like more control over dashboard layout. We’d love to hear how you’d group your widgets—keep the votes and comments coming!

Hi everyone, we really appreciate your feedback and the growing support this idea has received. Our product teams have been taking on board all that our customers have shared back on the new Homepage and are currently working on improvements to the sizing of some of the widgets including the Invoices owed to you and Bills to pay widgets - The intention is to provide a smaller widget size in which drafts will be shown beside the chart instead of below, helping the visibility and ease of use as you're after here.
I'll be sure to round back and update you when this is delivered 🙂

Hi everyone, we appreciate and want to thank everyone for feedback on the responsiveness of the new Homepage. This has been shared back with our product teams as they continue to develop this experience.
At this stage, there are no plans to fix the number of columns when using the Homepage. However, our team will continue to monitor usage on this closely.
One recent change we’ve introduced is that the Homepage layout can be saved at each screen size.
For example, if you set up and save the Homepage layout for your laptop and then move to a larger monitor you’ll see this adapt. However, if you ‘edit’ the Homepage and save the layout separately from your monitor Xero will remember the layout for each screen size. You should only need to do this once for each screen you use.
We’re looking at enhancing the edit layout experience soon to…

Thanks for your feedback and letting us know how we could improve the way duplicates alerts work for you here.
While we don't have any immediate changes planned for this, our team will consider improvements to this model overtime.
For the time being we'll continue to keep our eyes on the support for this in community, here. I'll share if there is any news.

Appreciate your feedback, Harpal and I want to assure you we're committed to improving this experience. We have recently released our new Smart Document Capture tool in Xero Files to the UK and will be releasing it to the rest of world very soon. I'll round back to confirm once it's live to everyone.

Thank you to everyone that's joined and shared feedback on our new homepage experience, here. Continuing to review and take this on board our team are working on some updates to the Invoices owed to you and Bills to pay widgets.
The intention is to offer more flexibility in the size of these widgets with the ability to reduce and remove the graph from showing.
I'll come back to share more as this progresses.

Thanks everyone, we appreciate the appetite in being able to view outstanding or a summary of unpaid invoices from the homepage.
Being closely engaged and feeding back with our product teams I can confirm your feedback's been taken onboard, however at this time there are no plans for developing a widget of this nature.
We will keep assessing the votes this idea continues to receive overtime and should there be an opportunity that this is picked up I will be happy to share an update with you all. Thanks

Hi everyone, we appreciate the attention this idea has been getting. It's really good to hear how we can continue to improve the Homepage for our differing customers needs. We understand not all the widgets maybe useful to every user, and the 'Edit homepage' button will let you add or remove widgets to reduce what you see on the Homepage.
Taking on board feedback we're looking at the sizing of widgets and you'll find the 'Chart of Accounts' and 'Cash in and out' widgets are now smaller by default with an option to 'Make larger' - You can follow further updates for this on the idea here.
We have plans to dig deeper into possible 'view' options (like the different levels of views being asked here) in the new year and I'll share further updates here when this gets picked up. 🙂

Oh for heaven's sake! I appreciate that this might not be the simplest thing in the world to resolve but we have been waiting YEARS for this problem to be resolved and there were Xero users who had been waiting for years before us. This is absolutely ridiculous. We have SO MANY customers with the same name where we have had to add a full stop or two full stops or three full stops or four full stops after their name just to be able to raise a customer invoice that we've lost the plot and the simple ability to differentiate between customers without a major investigation into our customer list - and that's without us having to "butcher" customer names so we have for example Dave and David or James and Jim or Phillip, Philip, Phil, Phill, etc. It's only a matter of time before a Xero user innocently falls foul of GDPR and data protection because the basic function of facilitating customers with the same name still does not exist within Xero. PLEASE GET THIS SORTED.
