Inventory - Add default tracking options to items
Adding default tracking option for inventory items in Xero.
Purpose: To make users don't have to think about or forget to add the correct tracking.
Appreciate the interest in being able to set default tracking options against inventory items.
While this isn't possible at an item level atm, it might be useful to some here knowing that you can set default tracking for your contacts.
To be open we don't have any immediate plans for extending default tracking set up against items, however we'll keep a pulse on the interest here and if there are any plans made we'll be sure to let you know.

Just chiming in here to say this is actually critical for us. We're in the process of giving xero a serious try coming over from Quickbooks Online and while we're really liking it we truly need to have tracking categories possible to be set as default for a specific item. It's labor intensive, and error prone, to have to set them manually on every line item of every invoice right now.
We understand you can default a customer to one, but many of our customers partake in services delivered by different departments of our company. Allowing us to set a default department/tracking category on a per item basis would solve this, as items are unique per department at our company. Please implement asap! Very simple feature that would overcome one of the bigger hurdles we have with Xero at the moment.

I'm working with a new client, a government agency, who has over 250 tracking items. It's INSANE that these cannot be added to items by default.

How many comments and votes does it take to get an idea to the development stage and implemented?
Adding tracking categories to item set-up for item inventory would save us SO much time and manual input. I find it really hard to believe that its not already there and that this hasn't yet been sorted.
Alternatively, having Xero 'guess' tracking categories for invoices in the same way it currently 'guesses' account codes based on frequent use would be a big step forward from current situation. We need to add two tracking category options to every line on each invoice so this adds up to a lot of time as some invoices have as many as 20 lines. -

Is it possible when setting up an item to have a fixed department code assigned. This is time consuming to always have to add this extra code when the item is tracked by both.

I would like to see a feature to assign default tracking categories to Products and Services, in the same way that the default sales / purchase account and tax rate can be assigned at present. This would help with ease and consistency of invoicing by having the option for the tracking to pre-populate on sales invoices based on the Product / Service selected.
It should probably be an optional field as I can see there will be some businesses where the same Product would need different tracking assigned for each invoice, e.g. if using tracking for sales at different locations. I work with businesses that have use tracking for different departments / activities, and for them it would work well to have this feature as certain Products would only ever be sold by one specific department / activity area so the same tracking would be wanted every time for that Product.

Seriously, come on. It is adding so much time and complexity and ultimately degraded trust in the numbers with this silly manual step in the mix. It would so so so much better and easier if we could just select the default tracking category for the item. Get with it!

When you set up an item, it would be great if you could link a tracking category to it so when the item is selected for a sales or purchase invoice, the tracking category is automatically added. At present when you add the item to the invoice you still have to manually select the tracking category it relates to
To do this, all you would need to do is add the tracking category dropdown to the Item set up screen. This would make then mean the tracking category is always present when the item is selected, hugely improving reporting analysis.

My client wishes to use tracking categories for product types. Please can Xero consider adding this, as I doubt it would be exceptionally complex.
Having to add this data to each invoice is rather a waste of our short little lives. -

Adding each item manually is labour intensive, would have thought it would be easy to add the tracking category fields into the Products and Services area to enable this

This is a must have.
For businesses who have to pay commission on particular products this is essential as at the moment we have to manually run reports and then do the work in excel which is time consuming. I should be able to just pull a report with tracking categories on a line level -

Please give consideration to including this. The benefit is that when selecting the item code for a purchase or sale, the default tracking categories for the item would prepopulate significantly improving the accuracy and efficiency of processing. Similar to how the account is prepopulated.

This needs to be possible. Otherwise every time I create an invoice I have to add the tracking category manually and that takes time...time is money after all!
