Global Search - Search items by Description
Ability to search items by description through global search in Xero.
Purpose: To save time searching line items, especially for users who are dealing with lots of items.
Appreciate the interest in being able to search by description. While we're attentive to your feedback, I want to be open that we don't have any immediate plans for developing this atm.
We're staying close to feedback on how we can improve navigation for our customers when using Xero, and I'll let you know if there is any development planned surrounding this, here. Thanks

This really needs adding ASAP. This feature would be so useful as I need to be able to look back on items to see what I have supplied customers at previously.

What is the point of having a description if you cant search by it? Makes the audit history pointless

Its crazy that you cannot search for contents in a description. this should be fixed.

I don't understand why a simple search has now become so difficult.
Previous to a few days ago I was able to complete a basic search in the top tool bar and receive the information required.
However, I have just been advised by the Xero Support Team that the search sorting has recently changed from sorting based on date to sorting based on score ie term used in the search not date order.
This has created much difficulty and now takes numerous attempts to get the same information and resulting in having to go into Bills and/or invoices and searching in this section to try to find the relevant information.
The only assistance I was provided was a link to this page to complain.
Please revert the search criteria back to its original format.

I can't believe a simple search function still hasn't been added to xero. I want to search for a description within invoices or quotes. I waste so much time with this and I keep looking for solutions that only refer me back to similar posts in xero forums. Im now looking at alternate accounting solutions.

To be honest it's incredible that there isn't a general advanced search with Xero. As much as I love using Xero it is making me look into alternative solutions like QuickBooks...

I'd like to be able to do a global search on a transaction that includes all bank accounts not just one. Having a client with multiple bank accounts when you are looking for one transaction is very time consuming.

My 30 years in the software business tells me that this is all about the cost of indexing services infrastructure. I have been through this myself a few times with other companies, and I guess that Xero has such a huge volume of small transactions they just can't slap something together...very understandable.
However, I was involved with implementing an application word search engine for a SaaS based commercial application. Worked a treat and was fast, reliable and cost effective, and this was a rather heavy duty document, text and database search use case. So the options are out there - let's do it Xero!

Not being able to search items like bills and orders by a keyword is such a remarkable oversight that I am almost too embarrassed to be writing this :-)
The means of using a transaction report as a workaround is so convoluted that it just annoys me - and probably anyone else who wants to do a QUICK word search.
Also, I assume that neither the report nor any proposed "search" will look at the contents of an attached document? Can I strongly suggest that this feature is just as important to we users who "pine" for a complete word search?

I've been a loyal Xero user for quite some time, but the absence of a basic search function has become a major pain point for me. It's mind-boggling how Xero, a widely used accounting software, hasn't implemented such a fundamental feature.
I find myself wasting valuable time sifting through invoices and quotes, desperately looking for specific items in the descriptions. A simple search, like typing "apples" and having any relevant invoice or quote pop up, seems like a no-brainer. I'm baffled by the fact that Xero hasn't addressed this seemingly straightforward need.
As a business owner, efficiency is key, and the lack of this basic search functionality is pushing me to explore alternative solutions. It's disheartening that a software designed to streamline accounting processes is causing such a significant bottleneck in my workflow. Xero, please take note and prioritise this much-needed update before losing more frustrated customers like myself.

The current search functionality is, to put it nicely, inadequate. I would actually say it's broken. I can put "dog" in the reference (or description) field of a transaction and NOT BE ABLE TO FIND that transaction by using "dog" as the search term.

I'm sure this used to be a thing?? Would save so much time and energy to have it search the descriptions! I would use it so often.

How has Xero not yet implemented a simple global search function...
I waste so much time searching invoices when I should be able to search a key word in a line description. -

The CTO commented on this a while back about how technically challenging it is. So I respect it not being implemented right away. However that was sooo long ago.
This was started over five years ago and the comments only go back to May 2022. I can understand that there are business reasons for not implementing this. But shame on Xero for apparently deleting or not showing older comments!

We have to search by "CTRL F" through multiple bills/invoices for a description item. Seems like a basic function that should be available in the current search field.

I can't understand why the description field is not automatically searchable. This extremely basic function was an assumption I made in switching recently to XERO - never thought to double-check this was available in XERO before moving our entire accounting system.
We regularly have to search back for information in the description field. The 'workaround' is not reliable - yesterday the system did not search the description field correctly and was unable to find an entry we were looking for despite it clearly being there (and subsequently found another way). It found 3 entries with the term in it but not the 4th. Super FRUSTRATING. UPDATE EDIT: Despite being dated in this search period, I think this 4th transaction is hidden somehow from search because it was imported/recreated from our previous accounting system by the accountant. I really hope this assumption is correct.
Regardless, the concern regarding the difficulty/complexity re the workaround in searching the description field remains. (Accounting/Account Transactions/Filter for Description field + search for term).

Yes a search function that gives a in-depth search, of descriptions of line items.
When I note a serial number or have sold a item and need to track when it was sold for a warranty claim, rather than having to search through several invoices over a 1 or 2 year period then find that item for warranty is a very long process.
Should be basic functionality.
