Hi everyone, a year on from my last engagement we wanted to provide an update for you all here.
As many will be across we're in the midst of making a lot of iterations and improvements to new invoicing leading up to the retirement of classic invoicing in September (2024).
We have a fair amount of work lined up in the teams schedule over the coming months and to give an indication there isn't any committed plans around a function to add interest to invoices.
That said, we do have a team that have picked up and are considering how we might solve this with the technology in new invoicing - It's early days on this yet, but I'll share if there's any progress on this for you all here.
In the meantime, as has been shared by others over time there are a few ways you could accomplish this today;
- Include detail of any charges for late payments to your invoice template Payment terms & details, and
- Edit and add a new line to your invoice to add the late fee - you could make use of Xero's inbuilt calculator for this, or
- Edit and add a 'mark up' to each line of your invoice - again Xero's inbuilt calculator could help with calculating the amounts
- Explore Xero's app store to see if you can find an integration that works for your business needs
- In an effort to prevent late payment of invoices Credit limits may help in being able to prevent customers raising too much debt with your business
We appreciate the options above don't automate the full process of what you're asking here, and we will share if there's any news. Thanks

I see a couple of people have indicated that they have moved to another company that actually cares about collecting overdue accounts and has this very simple feature.
It would be appreciated it one (or more) of these people would post a list of the alternative suppliers and how they rate them so those of us that require this simple feature can migrate to them,
I see that an enterprising business has jumped in to try an fill the cap, but at an extra cost which while is an a possibility I certainly don't wish to have any more of the costs of carrying debt eaten up and would rather move a supplier that offer it all in one package -

This is currently a struggle in Xero and this feature seems like it should be a standard feature for invoicing as most companies to impose late fees for invoices past due.

Hi Deryn
I applaud your enterprise in offering something that Xero seems incapable of providing.
I think however, that you have missed the entire point of this discussion. Every single contributor to this idea expects the ability to charge interest to be an integral part of Xero. We pay more that enough for this accounting package, and it should not be an added expense, especially in this economic climate.
I am slowly coming to the conclusion that Xero doesn't have the expertise to write the code required to provide this enhancement. (More than 11 years.)

Hey Alison,
Jumping in here as we (Paidnice, formerly Latechaser) are helping to fill the gap left here as a 3rd party Xero App, that will add late fees and interest to your Xero invoices.
More info here: https://www.paidnice.com/xero
Or our app listing here: https://apps.xero.com/app/paidniceThanks,

Hi Kelly
I think that all your customers appreciate that you are upgrading your sales technology however, if we can't collect the payment for the sale from our customer, there should be a way for us to charge them the interest that is due according to our terms of trade.
I don't think that there is a single, well run organisation in the entire world that does not have this in their terms, and for an accounting package not to offer this as a standard feature is bordering on inexcusable.
This 'feature' was requested OVER 11 YEARS AGO. How long do people have to ask for a standard business practice to be implemented before it is taken seriously?

Just a question for admin, please.
Can you provide an indication of how long it will take to complete your technology upgrades?
This feature has been requested over a year ago and your last comment advising of the upgrades was in October of last year.
Your feedback is appreciated.
Thank you -

I have already added a response on how this is essential to even the smallest of companies – especially small companies that cannot afford to buy your add-on. Since the few years that I have added my vote to have a late fee option added, I have since gone onto another platform that allows me to invoice with late fees. This is very inexpensive and I use Xero now for only basic, overall needs. Heads up!

I would have thought having this feature is necessary in any good accounting program. Zero, please put this in place.

Gloria Schoeppe commented
Most accounting software has this feature. Zero should implement this feature.

In my HOA management company, I need the interest feature for late payments, and could also use a late fee, in addition to the interest. Though - late payment interest would be a huge help!

This would be a very useful feature and as said by many others it is an inclusion with most other accounting software.

I agree.
This feature is free in other accounting programs. The ability to charge interest on late payments is a basic accounting process. Is Xero not an accounting program?
There is obviously a lot of support for this feature, as below comment, profit must be their main objective here, not their customers.

I believe (and after research, it is most likely true) Xero has another business name providing this as a 3rd party add-on, and I do not think they want to say goodbye to the extra profit they must provide for the basic service for free (as their competitors)

I posted a couple of times in the old thread and like everyone else here, I've given up hope of ever seeing this feature in Xero.
I only came back in here because today I recieved an email saying Xero has a new CEO and she invited us to "be vocal" in Community Discussions.
I doubt anything will happen however. -

I would really like to automate this. I have one client that hasn't paid thirty invoices and I have to adjust them all by hand!

At least we can all "enjoy" absolutely useless quarterly updates on new report layouts instead of features that would actually make a difference...Go Xero!

Maybe we can encourage all colleagues and clients to vote, hopefully we get to more than 1036 votes as from the previous poll (@ChristiaanHoek).

Without comment because it is so critically basic & urgent
