Search bar - Instant Search Focus for Faster Pasting / Typing
For years, Xero’s search bar worked in a way that allowed power users to click the search icon and immediately start typing or pasting. The input would automatically receive keyboard focus, so workflows that rely on quick data entry were seamless and efficient.
How it used to work:
Click the search icon (or press the search keyboard shortcut).
The search input was immediately focused.
Users could paste or type text instantly with no delay.
How it works now:
Clicking the search icon no longer guarantees immediate keyboard focus.
If you paste or type text too quickly after clicking, the paste does not work or first characters are often lost. For example, typing “Consultancy” might result in only “ultancy” appearing in the search bar. If pasting nothing actually pastes so you ave to cntr-V again.
This interrupts workflow, slows down repeated searches, and frustrates long-time power users who rely on muscle memory.
Proposed improvement / benefit:
Ensure the search input receives focus immediately when the search bar is activated, whether by mouse click or keyboard shortcut.
This restores previous workflow speed, prevents lost text, and improves the overall efficiency of search for all users, especially those doing frequent searches.
Hi Sally, thanks for sharing your idea, we appreciate hearing how bringing back the old search engine or improving the current one could make a difference to you. We'll continue to monitor this for more traction and keep you posted here. Cheers

Yes, this is so frustrating now. I am typing to then look up to see that nothing has appeared in the search box so have to enter again

This is driving me mad and yet I can't find anyone talking about it. I'm having to purposely slow down while using Xero as its so unresponsive

Thank you! Its more like a glitch that could be improved than new functionality that needs investing in. It still takes too long to be ready for input. Almost every time I use it I look up and it has only typed the last part of my search. I think users use Xero by memory and have a user speed in work flow, the software should be faster than the user speed, not slower. In this case now we have the dot dot dot animation, users are quicker than that part of the flow.

The lag in the new search bar is so problematic, I am busy and don't have time to wait for Xero functions to think about working. The previous search bar never had any lag. I am using it how I have for years, my search requests now always result in it only being a few letters it has picked up, not what I actually wrote.
XERO when you update things, please make them work like they used to. EVERYTIME I search for something now I have to remember to pause and wait for the program to sort itself, so that I can write in the search bar my entire search request.
Why does every update in this program in the last year feel like it's taking a step backwards in technology and not forwards!
