Chart of Accounts: Ability to merge accounts
I would like to be able to merge accounts (of the same type, ie expenses) to one account when there was two or more of the same account created.
Example: Say you've converted from another accounting system, and there were sub-accounts that are all the same account - that you want to merge into one account. To be able to merge the accounts - without doing a Find and recode.
Or, the client opened another expense account for something, and one already existed... to be able to merge the two would be a quicker solution instead of find and recode.
Hi everyone, appreciate your feedback on merging chart of accounts. We understand how this could be useful for tidying up accounts, especially after system conversions or when duplicate accounts appear.
While there’s no merge function right now, there are a couple of options that might help:
- You can use Find & Recode (available to users with the Adviser role) to move transactions from one account to another before archiving the accounts. We know this won’t suit every situation, as it requires unlocking periods.
- In financial reports, if you have several related accounts, you can edit the layout to group them for easier review and analysis.
After reviewing this idea, the product team has noted this is Not in pipeline, meaning it’s not something we’re planning in the near term. The idea will stay open for votes, and we’ll continue keeping an eye on the level of interest here.

I consider this critical to accurately recording transactions and maintaining historical data. There is too much room for error in recoding manually.

Need this feature asap. MYOB has so many better features than Xero including this one. It is critical to maintain the historical data but have both accounts merged to one especially when trying to clean up old mistakes from past employees.

I consider this a critical feature, where there is historic data in that requires merging.
The suggestion of editing reports is ok, however very time consuming as every new report must be updated.

Have a big project where client would like to update their COA numbering structure. 291 GL accounts. Merging the accounts would be great since it appears that I have to hand enter the new GL accounts to avoid archiving and losing transaction details to archived accounts.

Thanks to different accountants having particular preferences with regards to the names of accounts and their usage, some of my clients now have up to five accounts in the chart of accounts that relate to company income tax - I'd really love to merge the old into the new instead of having to unlock the old data to recode it all into the same account.

To be able to merge same name and type accounts in the chart of accounts. Sometimes when we convert from other accounting programmes - there are numerous accounts that are the same type (i.e., expense) and also the same item (i.e., motor vehicle expenses and/or motor vehicle repairs) To be able to merge this same type of accounts to simplify the chart of accounts and eventually the final P&L or TB or Balance sheet reports.
