Hi team, we've been following the conversation for being able to assign a tracking category to each account in the Chart of Accounts, and we appreciate everyone here who's taken time to share their feedback.
We understand manually assigning tracking categories to every line of a transaction is time-consuming and can lead to errors.
While not the direct idea asked here, it may help some to know that you can set a default account and tracking on individual contacts. On the flip side once transactions have been entered Find and recode is another feature that could possibly be useful to some here (however we'd recommend checking in with your advisor and testing in the demo org, before using in your own).
We want to be transparent with you here that though this idea has been carefully reviewed, like other areas of Xero the Chart of Accounts page initially…

Some charities maintain separate bank accounts for each fund. This works well where different staff/volunteers have delegated authority over specific funds, e.g. an outreach activity or youth work. It would be SO helpful for coding payments/receipts, if Xero would allow us to set default funds (tracking categories) according to the bank account. This is for coding payments directly from the bank statement, where Xero invoices or bills are not used.
Yesterday a client explained why she leaves so many transactions unassigned to tracking categories (funds) – she expected that Xero would do it according to the bank account. I think that is a fair expectation.
Although I'm suggesting that we should be able to set this up manually, it could also help if the AI coding algorithm would learn from the bank account as well as the contact/ transaction description etc.

Yes, with the ability to use the month from the transaction date, or the month before / after the transaction date, OR the month/months mentioned in the line description imported from the bank statement.

A lot of report-formatting requests could be met by an option to upload an Excel template file for a specific report.

Yes, this would be helpful. And when the transfer is reconciled on one account, then auto reconcile it on the other account also. We'd better have a setting to choose whether to automate the coding, in case some companies want to tinker with the descriptions e.g. stating purpose of transfer.

Yes, when exporting to Excel, the heading row (e.g. tracking categories) should be formatted as Wrap text = yes.
The row height should be set to display the longest column heading in full.
The column width should then be set to something sensible e.g. 15. Ideally the program might set the column width on a sliding scale, e.g. 13 if there are many columns, 20 if there are few, and a sliding scale in between aiming at an overall report that would be legible if printed on one sheet of A4.
Also, in reports by tracking category, please make the default width for the Total column a little wider, as long numbers are often not displayed currently, and we have to manually make this column wider.

Hi all, just updating the status of this idea to Accepted here, to align with our new statuses for Xero Product ideas. You can read more about this on our blog.
We're also pleased to see in your comments here that CAF have introduced QFX file types for downloading transactions - this'll make manually importing more streamlined until a bank feed is made available.
As per our last update, we appreciate all the interest a feed for CAF has gained and we want you to know this has definitely got attention from our product team, and something they hope to explore in the future however we can't provide any timeframes at this time. I'll be sure to keep you updated of any progress that moves this along. Thanks

It's bizarre that Xero has implemented an audit history table for payroll data, but only in Australia!
Until this is rolled out worldwide, it's also unhelpful that the Xero Central article on the feature (About Payroll History) makes no reference to this limitation.
