New Manual Journals - Compact view
I’m honestly quite dismayed by the recent update to the Manual Journal interface for NZ clients in Xero.
I’m finding the new layout a little difficult to work with. In particular, there seems to be quite a lot of space allocated to the amounts section, while the Account Title and Description columns have less space. I think the interface would be more practical and easier to read if the layout could be made more compact, with more space allocated to the Account Title and Description fields.
Additionally, the date format appears to follow the US/American standard rather than the New…
22 votesThanks for your feedback, Elma. Our product team is paying close attention to this and exploring ways to improve the experience for users working on smaller screens or using split-screen layouts.
The Account and Description columns are responsive, so widening your view will expand these columns and provide more visibility. We understand, though, that this may depend on your individual setup and processes.
I’ve updated the title of your idea to reflect your request for a compact view, which will help us track interest in this improvement.
Regarding the date formatting, dates in manual journals are localised. We recommend checking your browser’s default language and region settings and, if needed, updating them to match your location. For example, selecting English (New Zealand), English (Australia), or English (United Kingdom) will allow you to enter dates in the DDMMYYYY format.

Manual Journals - Journal entry number listed
On the list of manual journals, the journal entry number should be listed, you need to click on each one to find the specific journal entry number. Why is this not displayed?

Manual Journals - Total of Debit and Credit beneath columns
The new menu format does not make logical sense. You now have to scroll to see any details and in long journal postings scroll down the page due to unnecessary spacing and you cant resize the columns? In addition, why are the totals for the debit and credit columns not underneath the columns?
Logically, it would make sense to have the description first, followed by account, debit, credit to enable easy review. The new layout appears to be more confusing than anything else. If we can re arrange the rows, can we also re arrange the columns?
The previous format…
11 votesHi everyone, we have split this idea from the original post so we can get a better sense of interest in being able to view credit and debit totals directly under the columns here.
For now we are keeping an eye on the support for this here.

New Manual Journals - Increase column width
The latest manual journal update doesn't show enough of the description field to be able to read. It also won't allow us to enter down in the description, it just adds it all in 1 long line.
We should be able to increase or decrease the width of each column.9 votesThanks for taking the time to suggest this, Julia. A flexible column sizing and multi-line descriptions could make working with detailed manual journals more efficient, especially when reviewing longer entries.
I’ve updated the status to Gaining Support so we can continue tracking community interest. If this would improve your workflow, add your vote and share your use case.

10 votesHi team, just adding an update here as it's best if each idea is separated so we can get a clear gauge of interest in a change - I've created a new idea from this one about the debit & credit request, and have slightly adjust the title here to reflect the desire to change the column ordering.
We'll update if there is any change planned for either of these ideas respectively. Thanks

Manual journals - Wrap title in journal list
The new menu format makes it necessary to scroll across to see ANY details for journals with long titles, instead of being able to see everything at a glance. Either wrap the titles by default or give us a toggle option to do so.
8 votesThanks so much for sharing this idea. We can see how being able to view long manual journal titles more easily would be helpful, especially when you're quickly scanning your journals.
We've moved your idea to Gaining Support so other customers can vote and add their feedback too. If anyone else would find wrapped titles, or a toggle to control this, helpful in Manual Journals, please add your support and share how it affects your workflow — those details are really useful for our team.
We really appreciate you taking the time to raise this with us and help improve Xero.

Manual Journal move back old layout and toggle off cash basis reporting
Please change the manual journals layout back to the original permanently and not make me switch this very day. The new version takes up too much space and it is a lot harder to navigate. I suspect whoever designed this does not spend anytime actually entering journals. Another key issue is to have the show journal on cash basis reports unticked as the default. Journals by default are generally not cash movements. Thank you

New Manual Journals - Increase width of Title field
In the new Manual Journal screen, please widen the Journal Title field. It is currently so narrow that longer, descriptive titles cannot be viewed while they are being entered.
Screenshot 1 shows the limited visible space in the field. Because I cannot see the full title as I type, my current workaround is to draft it in Notepad and paste it into Xero. The full title then appears in the page heading, as shown in Screenshot 2, but it still cannot be reviewed properly within the actual field.
There is a substantial amount of unused horizontal space in the new…

For now, we'll get a sense of the wider interest in your idea and I'll make sure to let you know if there are any updates.

Keep the Classic Interface as an Option
The new journal entry interface is a step backwards in usability. In the previous version, I could view multiple journal lines at once because the layout was more compact and allowed the entire journal to be displayed on one page. This made it much easier to review, understand, and track entries.
With the new interface, there is much less visibility, and I find myself constantly scrolling to see related lines. This makes it harder to follow complex journals, increases the risk of errors, and slows down the review process. Similar to the GST report update, the changes appear to prioritise…

Manual Journals - Allow reversed manual journals to be visible on Xero
At the moment, if you reverse a journal with the same date as the original journal, it actually deletes both the original journal and the reversed journal from your manual journal listing in Xero. (You are only likely to do this in error, and it would not be immediately obvious to you as to what you have done). Both journals immediately become invisible and both are thus then uneditable. This should not be the case, there should be an ability to correct your mistakes. The only way to discover your mistake is by the 'Journal report' where you can see…
10 votesHi Neil, thanks for sharing your idea here. We appreciate the need for having a clear view of the reversed journals. We'll move this idea to gain more support from the community so they can share their thoughts and vote on this as well. We will monitor this space for more traction in the meantime.

Manual Journals - Ability to archive repeating journal
Archiving repeating journals
We have had a number of repeating journals over the years. We have gotten to the point where when we want to update these journals, we have to trawl through these. It would be nice to archive the ones we don't need any more so we can just see the ones we need.9 votesHi team, appreciate raising this idea with us. As noted by others right now it is possible to delete a repeating journal.
If you need to repeat the journal again in the future you could turn one of the previously posted journals into a Repeat journal to start this up again.
We don't have any plans for adding an archive option in the short term but will continue to watch the interest for this here.

Manual Journals list - Ability to set default for number of journals shown
Currently when you go to Journals, there are 25 journals showing. I have to constantly change this to 50 or 100 to view journals.
Can this default be changed to say 100?2 votesHi 👋 your idea is being looked into by our Community team. We'll be in touch soon to update you once your idea has been reviewed.

Repeating Journals - Option to switch from "post" to "draft"
I would like the ability to stop repeat journals set to "post" from posting automatically and edit them to generate as "draft".
I can't see a way to do this currently and have to delete and re-create which is tiresome
8 votesThanks for sharing your idea, we appreciate you explaining how switching repeating journals from "post" to "draft" could help your workflow.

New Manual Journals - Improve tab key behavior when entering lines
The new manual journal has added more tabbing which takes more time and has started hurting my hand. We went from a whatever it was to 7 tabs to get to the same spot in each line. It is nice to have an option to copy the line to the next line and select with a space. That seems to have added one tab. I could take it or leave it as a tab. I don't need that as often. But do we really need to tab to the trash column. Are we going to use that enough to need…
2 votesAppreciate your suggestion here. We can see how more streamlined tabbing through fields in Manual Journals could support faster keyboard-driven data entry and a more consistent workflow.
We've moved this idea to Gaining Support so we can continue gathering interest from the community.
If there are specific parts of the tab sequence you'd like to see improved, please continue to share them here. That context is valuable for the team as they review this idea.

Manual Journals - go to draft invoice screen after importing rather than posted screen
If I import a manual journal via CSV, after I click import, Xero takes me to the Posted screen.
The manual journal I imported is sitting in the Draft screen.
Xero should take me to the Draft screen.

New Manual Journal Feedback
Two things on new journals. One, I can't enter dates manually I have to use the mouse to select it which slows down data entry. Two, I use both cash & accrual journals. When I clicked into a journal on the old system I could see which type of journal I had entered. now I have to edit the journal to find out. I have reverted back to the old system.

Manual Journals - Date shortcuts to work with pre-entered date
When you use a date shortcut (eg +7) it DOES NOT WORK when using manual journals.
Here's a video demonstrating the problem: https://www.loom.com/share/6f035e84ebce42cab95c67dbbe65a608
I posted this feedback a few days ago and the reply from Xero admin was the function does work as designed, and since the thread is now closed, I've reposted with a video of me using the date shortcuts and demonstrating how they don't work.
1 voteHi TJ, thanks for sharing the short video - I can see what you mean here.
To clarify how date shortcuts work in Manual Journals, they’re based on the current date rather than any date already entered in the field. If Xero doesn’t recognise the shortcut you’ve entered, it defaults to today’s date.
If you want to enter a date from a previous month, the shortcut to use is “Date in a month”, as shown in our help table. For example, 8/Jun or 6/8 would enter 8 June 2026.
I understand the behaviour you’d prefer, so I’ve slightly amended the title of your idea. This isn’t something we have plans of developing for shortcuts at present but we’ll start tracking interest in this date shortcut behaviour from your post.

Manual Journals - Ability to Sort and Filter search results
Currently you are unable to concurrently search and sort results in manual journals, and can only do one or the other. Searching resets the sort to default (newest first), and sorting clears search parameters.
Please consider adding the ability to do both.
14 votesHey Jon, thanks for sharing this idea. Being able to sort and filter manual journals from the Manual Journals screen would make things a lot easier, especially when you're trying to track something down quickly.
We really appreciate you calling out how this could save time and help streamline your workflow. While some sorting/filtering is possible via the Manual Journal screen, we get that it’s not quite the same and adds a few extra steps.
This idea’s now in the Gaining Support stage. Every vote and comment helps us understand how useful this would be for the wider Xero community and gives our product team more insight when planning what’s next.

Manual Journals - Ability to post journal entries to bank/cash accounts
Remove the limitation on posting manual journal entries to bank/cash accounts. I end up spending way too much time on manual workarounds (payroll entries for example, you have to use a "bill" to replace the functionality of a journal entry). It ends up taking way more time working around the limitation than its worth. As a new user of Xero, I'm incredulous. I've worked with multiple accounting software platforms over the years, and never been exposed to such a massive limitation like this. It's almost a dealbreaker, and for some clients it certainly is. I've been looking for a viable…
165 votesThanks for the added detail, everyone. It's good to be able to share this detail back with our teams.
Appreciate why Bank Rules won't help for cash accounts and where you don't have a bank feed coming into the account.
Being open, this isn't something we have plans for changing in the short-term. We'll leave the idea open for our product team to continue considering how we could improve efficiency in some of the situations you've described. If there are any updates we'll share this with you all here.

Manual Journal Entries - Add detailed history
Hi Team,
We would like to highlight that in India, it is a regulatory requirement to maintain an edit log (Audit Trail) based on the Triple ‘W’ Approach – When, Who, and What.
For example, if a journal entry is edited, the system should capture and display:
Previous values (amount, GL code, date, narration, etc.)
Since this is a regulatory requirement, could you please confirm if an enhancement can be made to comply with this, and share an estimated timeline?
Looking forward to your confirmation.
