Ability to track raw material inventory for manufacturing.
Purpose: To make it easier for users to find out the amount that their business is using to convert raw material into sold products.

If I know that your system is not capable of keeping inventories, not able to do prepayment, not able to pay and closed invoices at my command, I wouldn’t even waste my time looking at it.
Your company is not straight forward with the service that offers and have a very poor description and limited to do nothing better.
You guys should be in a different business, not accounting, booking or anything that involves the same. -

As a small business that orders components to then build into a completed unit to sell, this is so badly needed. Our customers want a single invoice item not 15 separate components on their invoices. It is definitely a big plus that QB has over Xero.

Essesntial to have a work in progress aspect in the platform of Xero. Quick books can do it and they are using it as a stick against Xero.

This is an absolute must for any business manufacturing or creating product

Critical aspect of our inventory management to be able to assemble inventory component items into the final inventory finished product. Hope we will see this ability sooner rather than later in Xero.

Large Manufacturing concerns do this sort of thing every day. But small businesses like my 3D printing Business will use a stock of raw plastic filament to make parts for resale. The filament is tracked (because it can be used for a custom project), and so are the parts made from it. So there needs to be a way to record the usage of inventory to create other inventory objects. Here is one idea:
Create the concept of a Bundle, consisting of one or more inventory items, the bundle itself an inventory item.
In my case, the bundle would consist of the plastic filament used to create an object for sale, plus the printer time used to make the object. Whenever such a bundled object is sold, then it would transact the relevant usage of the bundles components.this also has the benefit of leading to simpler customer invoices. Really they do not want to see all the gory details about 50 grams of filament, 10 screws 20 hours of printer time etc. They just want a bill for the object they commissioned.
Just to be clear here., This feature should be made available on the low end xero packages for small businesses, not the high end xero packages.

This is at this point a make or break feature for my client. QuickBook apparently has this as an option with inventory, so we may have to move.
Will be very sorry to do that. Many thanks

@XeroTeam May we please have an update on where this idea is at.

Being able to track SD cards sales with a camera hire would be incredibly valuable to keep the stock levels of the SD cards updated. Thank you.

Most companies have an element of combining multiple products purchased into a finished product they sell. Xero must have the ability to sell either the raw material in it's own right or combine it to make a new sale product.

Need inventory for raw materials as opposed to assembled materials is very important for production costs. Very Important to distinguish between the 2.

@XERO please comment.
There are multiple idea's here that are all similar. Collectively this is a very popular topic that needs to be handled and communicated with us.

The tracking inventory really needs an upgrade. At the moment the only way to reduce the amount of inventory is by creating an expenses invoices. However, our customers do not want an invoice with a heap of lines and 10 pages long. We do everything in projects and add our inventory there. Why does this not automatically reduce our inventory count ??? And then if the item is removed from the project because it wasn't used then this would increase our inventory count back again.
Another option or additional idea to add would be the same as suggested above which MYOB has...The ability to 'build' a new item using other items. This idea could also translate into 'Inventory Sub-items'.
It would also be good if we had more viewing options. For example, only tracked items or if you have advanced tracking if you could view a single department/warehouse.
Another idea would be to translate new costs of items. When we receive a bill and enter the items the prices change so we override the stock items price but this doesn't translate to the inventory item itself. Hence price changes are inefficiently updated.
