Global Search - Search items by Description
Ability to search items by description through global search in Xero.
Purpose: To save time searching line items, especially for users who are dealing with lots of items.

Appreciate the interest in being able to search by description. While we're attentive to your feedback, I want to be open that we don't have any immediate plans for developing this atm.
We're staying close to feedback on how we can improve navigation for our customers when using Xero, and I'll let you know if there is any development planned surrounding this, here. Thanks

How has Xero not yet implemented a simple global search function...
I waste so much time searching invoices when I should be able to search a key word in a line description. -

The CTO commented on this a while back about how technically challenging it is. So I respect it not being implemented right away. However that was sooo long ago.
This was started over five years ago and the comments only go back to May 2022. I can understand that there are business reasons for not implementing this. But shame on Xero for apparently deleting or not showing older comments!

We have to search by "CTRL F" through multiple bills/invoices for a description item. Seems like a basic function that should be available in the current search field.

I can't understand why the description field is not automatically searchable. This extremely basic function was an assumption I made in switching recently to XERO - never thought to double-check this was available in XERO before moving our entire accounting system.
We regularly have to search back for information in the description field. The 'workaround' is not reliable - yesterday the system did not search the description field correctly and was unable to find an entry we were looking for despite it clearly being there (and subsequently found another way). It found 3 entries with the term in it but not the 4th. Super FRUSTRATING. UPDATE EDIT: Despite being dated in this search period, I think this 4th transaction is hidden somehow from search because it was imported/recreated from our previous accounting system by the accountant. I really hope this assumption is correct.
Regardless, the concern regarding the difficulty/complexity re the workaround in searching the description field remains. (Accounting/Account Transactions/Filter for Description field + search for term).

Yes a search function that gives a in-depth search, of descriptions of line items.
When I note a serial number or have sold a item and need to track when it was sold for a warranty claim, rather than having to search through several invoices over a 1 or 2 year period then find that item for warranty is a very long process.
Should be basic functionality. -

This is basic stuff and been requested since 2015! Why has it not been addressed?

We unfortunately are having to come over to Xero due to QB Desktop finishing and the Find tab is something which was used daily and cannot be found on Xero. Why is it not available.

Having tried Xero in 2019 I was totally put off after 20 years of Sage. Our company have made the decision to try again but Xero have not moved on!! A search facility has been requested since 2018 and Xero have done absolutely nothing about it. This facility is key to us, and likely to make us switch back...

When matching transactions in the reconciliation screen, the easy way to make a note is int he "Why" box this shows up under Description instead of Reference, adding the check number also doesn't show up when searching, this should be a simple fix.

I cannot believe this simple search is not possible with Xero. As much as I love using Xero there are small things like this that are starting to make me look into alternative solutions

Why is it so difficult to implement a search facility? Quick Books allows you to search for anything which is important to us. Xero is better at some things but the search facility is an issue for us. Not sure now why we switched to be honest ....

This would hugely assist, particularly as I assumed in the search box where it says "Description or Contact Name" - What "Description" does this refer to? I describe as accurately what the transaction was for so that I can find it again. eg USB Cable or Staff Lunch etc

The purchases overview should show the description so you can easily find similar invoices you've previously received and check coding etc. would be great for new starters

It is something that we use every day, all day and it is incredibly frustrating not to be able to search!

Xero you really need to come to the party on this. My previous accounting application would search ALL the text in a transaction. In Xero it is just too time consuming to find a transaction you need.
Some feed back where you are up to with this would be appropriate.

I can't believe this doesn't exist! What is the point of the description field if it's not searchable. Reference does seem to be searchable but there is no field for this when you are reconciling. What is going on?

It's something I wouldn't need to use very often, but it would save considerable time on the occasions I do need to search. Especially when some suppliers have hundreds of bills a month to wade through.

I am considering adding line item details to my bills. But without an integrated search feature over the description field, I will not be able to easily utilize the additional information when searching for particular bills containing desired line items. This is disappointing since this has been requested more than five years ago.
The CTO commented a while back that this was too difficult to implement. My suggestion is to not be concerned with returning 100% of the results (especially if they are recently entered line items). Even updating the index offline after a few days/weeks would be a great improvement, and would work JUST FINE for users that only want to search older bills. Especially since newer bills are easier to remember and likely can be reviewed quickly.

I have to enter site addresses and rego numbers as an Item (because it is always different to the delivery/invoice and client address and references) and I need to be able to look up site addresses from a search so I know what job I did at that site.
How is this not a critical issue for all other tradesman!?
