Franking Credits Workpapers - Ability to add dates
The franking credits workpaper is very handy but is almost pointless when preparing the tax return as you need to go back to the source documents to obtain the dates of payment. When ideally prefilling from the Tax Office, having the dates come through or being able to add the dates manually will assist with compiling the tax return.

Carry over schedules from old xero workpapers
The new workpapers need to carry forward lease schedules, borrowing cost schedules and any other schedules from the old workpapers. There is no way I'm setting these up again.

Income tax workpaper - Line for prior year tax paid
The income tax workpaper has the balance sheet workpaper. Unfortunately, you have to add an 'other adjustment' to record the prior year tax payment. It would be very helpful to have at least one line called 'prior year tax paid'.

Workpapers - don't calculate Tax on taxable income, when income is nil or it is a loss
Workpapers by default calculates negative tax when there is a loss. This is wrong.

Workpapers - Manual Journals - don't automatically mark as Cash Basis
Journals (General Journals, Manual Journals) are inherently an ACCRUALS transaction. Not cash.
Manual Journals can't be recorded against a bank account in Xero.
Manual Journals should NOT be Cash Basis by default. They should be Accruals ONLY, by default. Xero should give you the OPTION to include your Manual Journals on cash based reports.

Fix Journal Balancing Bug
When preparing Journals, I've repeatedly found a bug where it gives the warning that "Debit and Credit totals must match", and won't let you save the draft journal even though the debit and credit totals do match. I have to then cancel the journal and start again, which is especially frustrating when preparing large journals.

Workpapers - don't use decimals for fields Taxable Income and above. The tax return does not allow decimals, the workpaper shouldn't either.
The tax return doesn't allow for decimals.
When people use decimals on an income tax rec (before/up to taxable income), we end up with rounding issues and incorrect tax expense calculation.
Taxable income must be a round number, all of the inputs into the tax return to calculate taxable income must also be a round number, therefore it makes most sense to make the workpaper only allow round numbers (up until the point decimals are allowed in the tax return, which is when the tax expense is calculated).

Create Custom Workpapers and Procedures
Ability to add Custom workpaper to suit clientele. For example, the review process/ documents required will differ based on the entity type (Company vs Trust vs Sole Trader).
Also we need to be able to enter the supporting balance that is being verified against. Just comparing to PY doesn't show it's correct. This creates extra clicks to crosscheck to the source docs during the review and could be overlooked where the xero balance changes

Workpapers - enable Enter to activate Attach button after pasting a URL in Attach URL screen
After I paste the URL on the Attach URL screen, I want to click Enter.
My hands are on the keyboard. I don't want to have to move them to the mouse.
In original Workpapers if I pasted URL, tab Type the title and clicked Enter, it would Add link.

Workpapers - I don't want a warning for every single time I click an attached URL
More clicks. I don't want more clicks.
I understand security.. but if someone has already hacked my Xero account, gone to Workpapers, attached a URL to an account - I have bigger security issues than the fact I will be clicking a link within my (supposedly secure) Xero account!!!
Our URLs are to our SharePoint. I do not want to confirm I want to proceed. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

Workpapers - change Variance to Change or Movement (it is not a variance, it is a movement from one year to the next, which is expected)
It's bad enough that new Workpapers only show "Variance" for CY vs LY rather than CY vs supporting Workpapers (the whole point of workpapers).
This is not a Variance... it is a Change or Movement.
Variance is defined as:
- the fact or quality of being different, divergent, or inconsistent
- the state or fact of disagreeing or quarrelling
- a discrepancy between two statements or documentsYou'll notice that these all suggest a variance is not good (it's a difference of facts, quality, disagreement, discrepancy).
In the accounting world we try to solve or explain variances. A change or…

Set up new accounts when preparing a journal in new Xero workpapers
In the create journal window of the new workpapers, it would save a lot of time if you had the ability to set up new accounts there rather than back and forth into the Xero ledger. Also it would be nice if the chart of accounts updated with changes from blue Xero when posting journals in the new workpapers.

Automatic Journals from rolled over workpapers
It would be a perfect scenario that with particular types of workpapers, we could auto post journals in the following year.
For example - Borrowing Cost - if Xero created a Borrowing Cost workpaper that tracked borrowing costs and kept an amortisation schedule - this would then be rolled over to the following financial year workpaper - but it could go one step further where when it is rolled over and updated for any new loans or refinanced/paid out existing loans, we could have the option to auto post the amortisation journal.
Same thing with things like Chattel mortgages, especially…

Refreshing the data causing more work
We need the ability to be able to see which accounts have changed when we refresh the data as the work flow at the moment makes it more cumbersome for example:
- preparer drafts manual journals > marks as ready for review
- reviewer reviews and says everything looks good ok to post manual journals
- preparer posts manual journals and updates the status of everything to ready to review as they go and then when they refresh everything goes back to rework required

Workpapers - Fix Income Tax workpaper that incorrectly shows current year June PAYG installment
Despite the fact I raised this years ago, it was ignored when building the new Workpapers (ironically, this workpaper is one of the few that mimics the original Workpapers layout).
The Income Tax workpaper (attached):
a. correctly shows 4 x current year PAYG Instalments in the 2025 Tax to pay/(refund) section
b. correctly shows the prior year June PAYG Instalment in the Balance sheet income tax reconciliation section
c. incorrectly automatically includes the current year June PAYG Instalment (copied from the section above), in the Balance sheet income tax reconciliation section99.99% of the time, the prior year June…

Workpapers - Income Tax should never default to NA Not Applicable. Franking Credits should never default to Not Started for Trusts.
I started a Workpaper pack for a Trust.
Workpapers defaulted the statuses of the following workpapers:
- Income Tax: NA Not Applicable
- Franking Credits: Not StartedThis is silly. Income Tax applies to every entity.. Franking Credits only apply to companies.

Workpapers - Manual Journals - don't require a description (Manual Journals in Blue Xero don't)
Xero doesn't require a description for every line of a Manual Journal. Workpapers should be the same.
It also doesn't highlight/tell you which field it thinks is required but is missing. That's so lazy of the developers.

Workpapers - show workpaper completion on the All Workpapers screen (and why are you using a checkbox for this?)
Lol. I just noticed that the checkbox in a Workpaper says Mark Accounts as Completed.
How unintuitive is that?
On the All Workpapers screen the checkbox is for selecting (and performing functions). This makes sense, even if it is ridiculous the million steps you need to take to deactivate a workpaper.
Why would you have the icon exactly the same but have the behaviour completely different?
Why wouldn't you put a heading above the checkbox to explain what it is for? (If it's for marking the account as completed)
Why can't we see that the accounts in that workpaper are…

Workpapers - one click to save and close notes popup window (as Queries used to)
In original Workpapers, if I was adding a Query to an account or workpaper, after typing the Query I could click Save and the Query was saved and the popup window closed.
This is great and made total sense as more often than note, I am adding ONE Query/Note per account.
Now I have to click save and then I have to click close.
I don't want more clicks!!!
